Audio Interface choices...

Not trying to hijack this thead or anything, and maybe this might be relevant to the op's original question. Can anyone recommend one interface that has no bleed/crosstalk from the outputs back to the inputs? Or can this only be minimized? For example you use a guitar plugin on one of you inputs(this adds alot of gain), now your playback tracks and/or metronome is recorded slightly as well in the background. The only way I have been able to eliminate this entirely is to use two sound cards one for your inputs and the other for the outputs, then there is no bleed/crosstalk. Any recommendations appreciated!! I would love to use one sound card only but even an ableton member say's his RME suffered from this, and that's a really nice card!!

there is no crosstalk that matters in RME interfaces.. at least not the ones with break out box..and you only should go for such.. evrything else is a sound card.

If one experiances such problems he has fucked up the wiring and in general no clue how to set levels aso

anyway.. if you have a soundcard that has wordclocking and aes ebu I/O yopu might use external converters..

theese days you can get realy decend oldscool converters for little money..

so its actually possible to have one stereo 19 inch 1HU box for input and one for output for less than 200 euro... stuff that was new 4000 euro or more but not wnated anymore becasue only 20 bit and 44/48 k...

but still better than a cheapo 24 bit 96 converter... that includes firefaces...


old second hand high end is allways better than newish kid toy stuff...



And there is an old rule by thumb.. dont have anything labled behringer in the audio chain...that especially applies to mixing desks..

If you have a PC laptop with their cheap integrated firewire and 4 pin mini FW, you would probably be better off with a good USB 2.0 interface - RME Fireface UC, M-Audio Fast Track ULTRA/ULTRA R-8, Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1, EMU 0404 USB and Edirol UA25-EX are typically good performers with decent low latency drivers.

USB is a joke for professional work IMHO.
Grab a good Firewire PC-Card (PCMCIA, NOT Express-Card) like http://www.siig.com/ViewProduct.aspx?pn=NN-PCM222-S4 plus a good FW Audio IF like http://www.focusrite.com/products/audio ... ire_pro_40 and you're good to go.

new laptops don't even have PCMCIA slots anymore. and Express Card is faster. it's the difference between PCI and PCI-e slots on a desktop computer.
and that isn't pre-2009. i've got two laptops that were purchased in 2007 that have express card slots on them. i ended up giving away my old echo indigo dj card to a friend because of that.

If you're worried about sound, why would you use Ableton Live?

Do you also use ProtoolsHD, for when you want to record seriously?

I've just started using the M-audio Fast Track Ultra with Live 8. It's not sounding good. Quite a few crackles and pops, even with the largest buffer sizes. Gonna try it with Live 7 for comparison once I've got an extra unlocking code. Has anyone had the same issues with the Fast Track Ultra and been able to resolve them ?

No matter what audio interface you buy, you are probably crippling its sound quality if you run your instrument thru the Behringer mixer first. An audio chain is only as good as its weakest link. You would be better to buy an interface with multiple line inputs and mic pre's and plug your sources directly into them, and plug your monitors directly into the outputs of the audio interface.

+1 absolutely, i will never understand the "ignorance" of the signal chain and it's weakest link...

i have seen horrible things, like RME interfaces and top monitors and then using a behringer monitor controller... ARRGGHH...

or some cheap pres or whatever...

look at your chain and choose something that keeps the quality level on a constant.

+1 on the Saffire Pro 24. It works flawlessly so far in my Vista(32) notebook... even using the inbuilt 4-pin Ricoh port! I'm ordering a proper expresscard to firewire 400 adapter with the TI chipset.
My only concern is that none of the new laptops(PC or MAC) that are shipping have firewire nor expresscard slots... just USB. So this unit is already obsolete as I'm thinking of replacing my laptop.
