Re: PING - iTunes 10. Yet another social networking site.
I am a long time Apple user, and long time LastFM user.
Ping sucks.
iTunes 10 also sucks.
I want a jukebox, not a whole new environment inside my jukebox.
Apple have betrayed their users. They have lost their way, and I wish there would be a backlash. I fell out of love with Apple a long time ago, but recently there has been a spate of things which have added salt to the wound:
1
I "upgraded" to IOS4 on my iPhone 3G, and now my iPhone is much slower than before.
My next phone will probably not be an iPhone, and if it is, I will not upgrade the operating system, ever.
2
On my iMac, my Wifi connection is constantly dropping when on OSX, but not when on Windows.
3
After I installed iTunes 10, my mouse buttons (3rd party mouse because Apple mice are shit) stopped working properly and I had to jump through some hopps to get them working again.
4
After I installed iTunes 10, I realized that iTunes 10 is shit.
5
Apple have stopped focusing on elegant, simple software design, and are now bloating everything they can get their hands on. We now have a different buzzword application for nearly every other file type, they want you to "SYNC" fucking everything, files get doubled up or lost, hardware needs to be upgraded to use it with software, software has to be upgraded to use it with hardware, software has to be upgraded to work with other software, hardware stops working properly when you upgrade software.. I could go on.
6
They're also cynically pushing their customers into upgrade cycles for both hardware and software.
7
I still only have a handful of crap text tones to choose from on my iPhone.
Skrew you Apple. Control Freaks.

Re: PING - iTunes 10. Yet another social networking site.
it will end up like all of them - 1000 messages a day from various douches all over the place saying "hey [name] dig your music, check out my new tracks……. blah blah "
the reason myspace sucks and all of them end up sucking eventually.
I had to turn of the email notification function in Soundcloud because so many people are trying to do exactly the same thing there. I will never, ever click on one of those spam links, and neither will A&R people. I'm not sure if people really get a lot of response from it, but a hell of a lot of people seem to spend a lot of time doing it.
Fortunately I could turn off the emails and I did, and now soundcloud does only what I want it to, because it was built from the ground up with only the music industry in mind.
I think as far as actual musicians interested in getting their music out there soundclound has done a really good job and will hopefully keep that feeling that it's more specifically for people who produce/mix in some way or run a label - i.e. just about all labels now prefer to accept their demos through the soundcloud drop box, and a lot of big name artists do too.
the big flaw with myspace was people had to go to your page and click on your tracks and because it wasn't specifically built just for people in the industry you had a million other twits spamming it with an incessant stream of crap.
What I read just then briefly in the wired link seemed to suggest it's more facebook like where you share your music interests - i.e. aimed at fans not musicians, and if that's the case it's of no use to us because it will end up exactly the same as myspace and all the other spamming bollocks out there.
Personally, If I want to get on iTunes then I'd rather get on a label that puts me there.

ha ha ha… from one of the comments…surely this was you ChiDJ:
MSN Messenger had a feature back in the day that showed to your contacts what song you were listening to (via Windows Media Player).
It had the unfortunate feature of displaying the title of whatever was on Windows Media Player, including video. And by video I mean filthy, filthy pornography.
Here’s hoping Ping doesn’t show what I’m watching!

Is it just me, or are there only like 10 artists you can actually follow still?

Unsound Designer
Re: PING - iTunes 10. Yet another social networking site.
I'm probably being a little Apple fanboyish in my support of this but I think other people are being the usual "Apple sucks" about it. If some other random startup music site comes along, as they often do, people get all excited or at least curious. And most of the time those sites only lead to exposure to other musicians and DJs, not the general public. But iTunes, the top online music retailer, adds some social networking capabilities and people dismiss it as stupid or unneeded bloat and at the same time don't question that the current best routes for online exposure have very little to do with music at all. They see myspace and facebook as a necessary evil, but iTunes? Fuck that.Mass Movement wrote:outershpongolia wrote:Exactly, and yet they'll still try to get us little guys to buy into it thinking we're going to get exposure when really they're probably just trying to reel us in as usersHidden Driveways wrote:Zzzzzzzz...

But also on a purely music buyer level I personally don't see the need to let other people know my personal purchasing habits or likes beyond the already in place anonymous reviews or "also bought this". But I also realize the generation after mine has this incessant need to let the world know their opinion at every possible moment.

Well almost 80% of my own music sales comes from iTunes so, I'm paying attention.
