First, always wait for coupons from GC and Sam Ash. For instance, I recently had one for $50 off or $299 or higher item. So you could get an APC for $250+tax...
But, IDK, in my case, I felt that the extra visual touches of the Remote Zero were better for me. The APC is great if you map out every single plugin to coincide with the 8 knobs, but still, when you load up, say the compressor, you really don't know which knob is which parameter. I like that the Remote Zero labels everything with the LCD screen. Would I be as happy with another controller without visual aid, probably not.
So: LaunchPad + Remote Zero MKii > APC40 in my case.
But then you are looking at $150+$279 @ BHPhoto unless you want to go used...

Now, if only there was a script to make the Remote Zero's mixer channels follow the grid focus from the Launchpad!!!!

Does the Remote Zero automatically do that with Ableton? Like if I have it plugge in and I click on an instrument it will automatically map the 8 knobs and display what they are for? That's really really cool if it does...
I have a 50 dollar gift certificate to musicians friend that's been burning a whole in my pocket for a very long time haha.

Yes, it does. And not just only 8 knobs, you can page through as many as you need. All with titles and values. I love it personally. And you still have 8 other knobs, pads and buttons to leave routed to whatever midi assignments you want. EFX on/off, drums/sample pads, master effect parameters, etc.
OH, and BTW, if you do use Musician's Friend, they will match anyone else's price, so show them the BH page and then use your $50...

Damn. I might be sold on one of them plus a launchpad...its impossible to get confused!
I just got offered a 61 key Axiom for 150 too.
How does this set up sound:
Ableton Suite 8
M-Audio Axiom 61
Novation Launchpad
Novation Remote Zero SL

TBH, with the Remote, you wouldn't need the axiom. You could get a cheaper, plain controller like the Key Rig. Although 150 is pretty cheap. Also, check my last post about Musician's Friend...

150 is really cheap for that keyboard though...and I don't have the money for everything right now, so I think I might as well take that deal on the keyboard and maybe later when I have the extra cash trade it for cash towards the novation stuff and a simpler keyboard.
And I didn't know that about musicians friend, but I will definitely keep it in mind, thanks a lot!

Yes but that for me is the wrong way around, like you say, if the Remote Zero followed the Launchpad that would be very cool otherwise you are using the mouse to select Racks, no?
I'm in need of a different keyboard and I'm wondering about this myself...

ChrisMack99 wrote:Well the APC is about 150 dollars more than the launchpad...would you say a launchpad + a 150 dollar mixer is better than just an APC40?
launchpad + nanokontrol (with kontrolmyr scriptz) = 100 bucks left

if you're going to get something as big as an apc-40 I'd go with a native instruments maschine instead, why?.... because although having faders on the apc is nice I would rather put my money in the creative side of things, this might sound funny but when the music you're working on sounds really good to you it matters less and less what you're making it on and the native instruments maschine is an extremely creative writing tool in addition to being a kick ass midi controller, plus it makes heaps better use of it's size and controls than the apc 40 imho. I would never want to take the apc-40 anywhere but taking maschine with me here and there is no problem, so this is just an alternative thought, the maschine will help you write dope music much better and then you can turn around and controll it with the same piece of hard ware in a very creative way.

Whats the software like? I'm just starting to learn Ableton, I don't know if I want to distract myself with another program...
EDIT: Another question: What is the launchpads answer to the APC40 having the mute, solo, and arm buttons right below the clip trigger buttons?

About ableton live, once you've entered it, when you catch some funny tricks, you'll realllly love it.
On the launchpad you have access to volume mute and solo buttons, but you can't launch clip and mute or solo things at the same time because it's not on the same page [LP has clip/user1/user2/MIXER]
I first have bought an apc then I felt for a launchpad

, I don't regret any of them

Does the pad have an arm button so I can play my keyboard on different tracks live?

I had the exact thoughts about the APC40 vs Launchpad as the OP, but am glad I went with the Launchpad in the end. I use a Korg nanoKontrol for extra button/knob/fader action and it compliments the Launchpad beautifully.
Without this though, I would find the Launchpad annoying!

I've also been using the launchpad with a nanokontrol to good effect. it just pains me how closely the nanocontrol faders almost line up with the launchpads grid, but not quite.
