I feel your question was more about mixing than mastering.
The waves plug ins are great they have great LA2A's and ssl emulations that add warmth and defecation.

Also the TBK 3 from sonaklis is amazing you can use it for parrel compression to add a snapy sound and bring out then transition.

any compressors or Limiters etc..... that have a unique character sound?
I have been worried for a longtime about which big vst could I buy for mastering...
Then one day I tried the ableton live audio FX rack called vintage mastering 2.

But I'm still worry about my skill to master.

In studio the master track stays at 0dB with no fx on this track.
Everything is done on each track, as said above mastering is an art and it take so much time to master [no word trick here I swear].
I got so many work to do yet, but the reward worths it a billion!

my two cents

compressor i strongly recommend Solid State Logic Duende, this is the best at market.
for limiting and multi band compressing Flux Audio is great, years ahead of others.
for eq Abbeyroad and Spl.
for modulation and fx SoundToys, especially Decapitator.

these are expensive, but if you want great results you have to pay the price. :D
