it's well known around here that live is not capable of quality vocals. otherwise,we'd hear more songs recorded with live and vocals.

point me to at least one song made with live with good sounding recorded vocals. then, i'd shut my mouth.
all recorded in Live

By that logic, I wouldn't need my Sonnox Limiter because Live added a limiter in Version 8. Riiiiiight.

Much as I agree with you on the commercial flogging of the sound, Farq Me, I'd love to have the bugger's money and if I did, I doubt I'd give a shit about my cred in internet forums.

+1 tbh I prefer separates now.

E.g I use ozone 4 but have replaced some of it's features with the fabfilter eq and limiter because I feel I have better control of what I am doing.

Yeah, I'd like to see this too - put your money where your mouth is.

'every daw has these tools' - erm, no actually. Live has no form of pitch correction at present without using 3rd party plugins. Given that the pitch correction function is the core part of Nectar, this would fall on it's ass very quickly. (hint - you might try Gsnap vst, which is a free pitch correction, although it does not stand up to autotune, melodyne, waves tune etc).

So the saturation, compression etc. sure - but you can't get beef from a potato Nathann.

the argument makes sense if this were the Cubase forum....Nectar looks obsolete in Cubase 5, what with -both- the pitch-editing 'vari-audio' and the real-time pitch-correcting plug, can't remember the name. you probably could make an FX chain in less than 5 minutes that does everything nectar does. but you know, Live 9 will probably try to 'catch up' and add new vocal plugs, fwiw.

so, Leeds, as someone to be known having a really good production knowledge, what would you recommed, when just Live 8, Ozone 4 and some free VSTs are in place: buy or not?
vocal recordings are close at hand in my current production...

Hi everybody,

I'm a big Izotope Fan, using Ozone 4 and als Alloy, both are amzing tools. So I tested Nectar and here's my opinion:

All the normal processing modules like EQ, Compressor , Limiter is very high quality, same as in Alloy.

The Breath Module does not work for me. It also takes out "k"s and "t"s or any other parts that are detected to could be breath. Also it has a latency (of course because of the look ahead) that makes it unusable for me...

The Doubler is not very good in my opinion, the Waves Doubler is way better.

The Pitch Correction works, but Melodyne is also better.

I would still recommend Alloy and Ozone4. Alloy is really amazing...

Cheers

Stefan

I haven't tried Nectar because I don't see it as being a priority to test out, given I am happy with my present pitch tools (Cubase 5 mostly). MHolloway makes a good point in that Live 9 could potentially offer something in terms of pitch correction.

Cubase 5's variaudio is a very good tool for free, (works very much like Melodyne Uno) but only handles monophonic sound sources (i.e. vocals, lead guitar, bass (if single notes), monophonic synth sounds etc). Given that vocals are the main element in need of pitch correction, typically, it works well and the Pitch Correction plugin is a reasonable easy fix (early autotune like plugin) solution which is also good (I find it especially good on bass guitar, like if the D string was flat etc and you didn't notice, it can be straightened out pretty well without all the surgical editing which goes into variaudio).

Live 8 users who need something quickly - my first suggestion would be to try Melodyne. Not exactly original, but I prefer it's way of working to Autotune and Waves and find it a bit more surgical where you need it to be.
