I ended up just washing it out with reverb, throwing a delay and a chorus on it. Now it sounds like an incoherent stereo mess. I think I'll try using other sounds to draw attention away from it instead.
To hide it better try making sure it has the same rhythm or a counter rhythm to something in the piece already. Just sticking stuff in makes it cluttered and if it's not adding to the piece it's taking it away. So, you could try this, have it follow a rhythm that's already in the track, then remove that instrument and have another following the same rhythm but with the sample overlaid.... If it's just added and it's not a focus sound then often it will just sound a bit crap, if you change the instrument and add it it's got a better chance of working. YRMV though...
