They aren't better at anything at all. They are just easier to use for people without thorough computer knowledge. Therefor they are less likeley to fuck up their system.

A PC will be much faster than a similarly priced MAC, however, it requires more knowledge to use it correctly.
The hardware is pretty much irrelevant, the Mac stability is in the OS and the reduced ability of third party drivers to screw up.

I gotta disagree.
The hardware is also completely engineered by Apple itself.
Thus the OS and its core-drivers are in perfect harmony unlike in the rather cluttered PC world.

Also they arent easier - at least not if you're coming form the Windows world. And well, TO fuck up a Mac system you probably need more knowledge than on a Windows machine (i doubt the average mac-user would open a Terminal and type "sudo rm -rf /*" )

Anyway, @nastyrazz:
When this happenes to you, does the little red "D" on the top right of ableton flash?
Cause it sounds almost certainly like your harddisk is the culprit in this case.

As a PC user I guess you use a virus-scanner? Is it on when DJing or did you switch it off?

Well you may choose to disagree but you are wrong

The hardware is mechanically well engineered which makes the machines more physically robust and of course more elegant. But architecturally there is little to choose between and Intel based motherboard on a mac or PC. But having a single company producing hardware and software does allow most of the problems to be found and ironed out before production or soon after.

But all versions of Windows seem to share the amazing ability to spontaneously develop strange problems even when absolutely nothing has been changed for weeks on end, something very rare with OSX or Linux .

But that's what I meant anyway, so where am I wrong there?
Archicturally speaking there's hardly a difference (except for Apple relying on EFI, which I think is slowly coming to the PC world as well by now?)
since the move from PPC.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. No the red light on the corner doesnt come on. I use microsoft security essentials anti virus. I dont think that has a scanner. I dont it manually. Anyway I have found a temperary solution. If I use my maya 44 usb soundcard and only use the xponent as a controller it works perfect. It must be something to do with the xponent soundcard not working correctly with my laptop or ableton.

Whats up guys. I am just getting my hands dirty with Ableton 8 and APC 40 for DJing live. I have a Toshiba satellite dual core with 2 gigs of ram. For the most part I can say I know a good amount about PCs. I have my A+ cert and been working for a communications company for over 7 years now. I do a lot of IT work for my current employer so I pretty much seen just about every hickup and virus you can imagine. There are many things to keep in mind when dealing with PCs. First and foremost as mentioned hard drive. If you can pick yourself a nice external 7200rpm hard rive so you wont tie up resources for your laptop. Not sure if possible for many but if you can have 1 laptop set aside for DJing live only. This means no downloading or installing unnecessary programs. There are countless number of errors or viruses out there that can harm your laptops so its always good to have a nice clean laptop which you know is reliable to play live on. Try to upgrade your ram ! Right now I have 2gigs but since ram is so cheap now a days I am definitely thinking of going up to 4gigs. Again remember for 32 bit operating systems 4 is the max unless you go to 64 bit. I have used XP, Vista, and 7 many times. Call me old school but I still like XP with service pack 3. Vista is just full of errors and issues and I find 7 to be a resource hog. Well hope those pointers help you guys. I also agree with all those that say Mac's are over rated and over priced. For the price of Mac you can purchase a faster PC for maybe half the cost. Now when it comes to maintenance I agree its twice the work. Always gotta keep your system clean and protected or else issues like freezing and the famous blue screens will give you a lot of headaches.
