before you start what? each tome before you press start?
I think he means each tome before you start destructively messing around with a live set. I save live sets with a "YY/MM/DD" marker (e.g. "101206_Track-I'll-Never-Finish-nr-1587.asd") within a project to keep track of progress, before doing anything.

MrBon it's not true that all soft behave like this.

in photoshop as exemple, you can get back in history even if saved, same in afterFx, 3dsmax ect..

I also often made the error of pressing CTRL+S instead of CTRL+Z and then no solutions to get back.

Maybe a popUp asking if we really want to overwrite the file is needed, that's often used in other softs,
with a bypassable option in preferences if some wanna keep actual setup.

quite frustrating to loose some work cause of this.

Destructivly messing? what is about constructivly messing?
Any moment can be the one teh inspiration hits you and you start doing a runoff, that you take over from the previos recorded runoff... you usually realize that you are good after the climax. but than its too late...

I am very sure that i am not the only person on the planet that works rather inspiration driven than folowing an agenda..and i am used to play life and to form things life while they are happening or my hand just starts playing the keyboard and a certain mment and thatss just the wright moment..

Logic had at one point the recal last pass as record function..only on the midi side ..bad really fantastic when you have a complex midi setup and any knob and keyboard you have touched during a path can be stored after it has happened..

That such a function appeared in a major DAW is actually the proof that i am not the only one..

And its really a basic design question if you take such spontanious musical workflows into consideration or if you rather want to build a spread sheet calculation for music..

While the early version of live seemed to work in the wright direction all later developmemts actually point to the spread sheet calcualtion standard business as usual style. At least ther was no sign whatsoever that live has been improoved in that regard since L1..all the spontanios freak stuff was there from version 1.. since than teh added just standard functionality..
only positive thing..the removed the prohibation to only have one pareamter assignabel to a controler number..
That was clearly a erd thing to ..to prohebit double assignments to avoid possible confusion :-/

Native instruments is rather a company that is more musican orientated theese days.. Ableton live is a clear nerd design mixed with an us style blender attitude (overszised lunchpad for example) the looks are more important than the functionality and stage related issues like the syncing to other musicans have low prority on abletns agenda..

So one really cant expect them to change the standard clear undo buffer after safe routine.. what would be musican friendly..

Just one question..

what is the higher reason for clearing the undo buffer after safe? to safe disk space? or to protect the user to accidently do an undo step that goes before the last safe and therfore would risk the integrety of your data bank?

sorry guys.. to erase the undobuffer in a safe is clearly a function that wasnt invented for music creation.. to stick with that just shows how the minds of the authors of the software works but dont has any practical value for music production,,rather to the contrary

Simple workaround: don't press ctrl+s until you are happy to save your music
TTKK / NOODLES / iANDALE! / TIGERBEAT6 / HOT & HEAVY etc

Sorry 3phase, I don't want to sound fussy, but you would do us and yourself a huge favor by proofreading before pressing "Submit". Your posts are even harder to decipher than usual.

Yes it's SHIT.
Maschine works the same, you save and you cannot undo. What's wrong with them serisously ?

What about Logic, pro-tools ? Can you undo after saving ?
I had Logic 2 years ago now and I think you can but I'm not sure.

in reaper you can undo after save.
You can undo even if you close a project and reopen it

in cubase sx3 if i remember correctly it was possible ...

logic? it should be there because of its name ;p

neat huh?
+1 I often end up with 20 versions of the same song, really neat.

Once I recorded drums for a track (with 12 microphones, it took two days). When I got home, I accidentally deleted the drum tracks and saved the set. And I only had one version of the set

An odd and surely undesirable wish to have granted.

BTW, common sense would suggest that you save to multiple project files, e.g.:

Jam 2010-12-01 001.als
Jam 2010-12-01 002.als
Jam 2010-12-01 003.als

... and so on. Just do a CTRL-SHIFT+S to save to a new file every 20-30 mins or so, or at least every hour. :P

Edit: Hah, I think the phrase is... "ninja'd"? By an hour!

The alternative is an infinitely expanding undo list, it has to be stored you know and it takes up resources.

Right. And live performers need as many resources as they can get with Live's opportunities to alter sound on stage.
