As a lot of venues run a mono sound system how is this important?
Are you performing background music for corporate PowerPoint presentations at movie theaters?

I'll upgrade. Not planning on getting a new laptop for another two years and this one isn't 64 bit compatible.

dorks are worried about the wrong things. it's the musical features that they should get me with and I don't mean a piddly little guitar tuner.
after the Live 8 debacle Live 9 had better be one charming motherfucking pig.

Waiting over a year and buying a new system to run live on is going to hold me off for a while. Paying to be a beta tester isn't fun. It wouldn't be until late 2011/early 2012 before I think about upgrading. Features are great, bit stability is more important to me.

you want a new machine? current one isn't running very well? just blame the software?

I think they have to this time around. Nearly every plugin I have has a 64 bit version as well now, so no plugin support is not an excuse, all the hardware that I use that works on windows 7 32 has equally good 64 bit drivers as well, so thats not an excuse either.
I guess however it aint as simple as just moving to 64 bit? Im guessing for VST that means also migrating to hosting VST3 plugins in some way that is meaningful in a fixed stereo daw without crippling the full capabilities of many multi channel plugins.
Also if doing such a major upheaval, then I might hope they take the oopotunity to sort out several other core thing that could be done so much better - multicore handling - make the load distribution way more even and predictable. Thing like full bezier curves etc have allways been put back for claimed architectural limitations as also is probbaly the reason why multiscreen simulataneous arrange and session viw still hasnt been done. Also M4L and DJ application (currently just serato, but why stop there?) intergration support might be way way better supported at the core and of course the way in which MIDI is handled could be vastly improved - somethig else horribly crippled in various ways by the chosen audio engine architecture and that midi was one of the major boltts ons over the years ratther than designed in at the start.
Get the core right as a new platform for the next several versions and I think we could see good things in the versions to come. Currently its straigning at the seams very badly with one major bolt-on after another.

I will upgrade for 64 bit. That's effing gotta be there. Not expecting recording clip automation at all. They could also sway me with other nifty features like better instrument racks or some cool combination of group tracks with racks on the master track. That kind of junk.

+1 on surround sound

I could care less less if Live 9 is 64 bit or 32bit, I don't see what all the fuss is for anyway. Logic is 64bit, hasn't changed anything for me when using it.

except Logic 64 bit lacks some of the functions of the 32 bit version and crashes more !!!
But if you do a lot of stuff with streaming samples, from say, Kontakt, Omnisphere, or VSL or East West libraries it will eventually be the new norm and offer large benefits.

I generally upgrade/buy things based on what the DO offer me, not necessarily what they DON'T.

Ableton's RAM limit right now is, what, 2.5GB? Go over that and it crashes. Not acceptable - it's time to move on to 64bit.

all my vsti are stream from disk... that why 64-bit ableton live9 would be ideal for me... i guess vsti(s) like omnisphere/trillian, kontakt, east/west or halion sonic has not caught up with the mainstream music makers....

sorry, i was on my lunchbreak typing blindly on the iphone while watching MSNBC.
I bought an HP Elite E9180F, i7 920, 9GB system with vista 64 bit over a year ago. This was supposed to be the problem solver for a slower laptop, but I experienced CPU spikes and crashes often in the 8.0.x era. Then I upgraded to windows 7 64 bit professional edition (as soon as it came out) and that was a blue screen of death nightmare only in live and street fighter 4 though. It tended to freeze up when having a session of a few tracks holding either tension, sampler, or drum racks. Somehow analog and electric weren't too bad. When it came to making layers with tons of samples, it would work for a little bit then windows 7 would freeze up. Freezing and blue screens happened intermittently for me, so I really couldn't do anything about it because I couldn't recreate the bug for reporting.
So my workaround to the issue with the cpu spikes and freezing was mangling my samples in kontakt 3.5/4 and emulator x3 and just using them as a VST in live. The biggest selling point in live 8 for me was corpus and the groove engine so as long as I used a vst to work with those two features I would be happy with that. The freezing happened less when live when 8.1.7 for me, but I still got the blue screen at the most random times, but I cursed at the screen much less. When live 8.2.X came out, it finally met my needs and workflow style the same way I was doing a lot of layering of samples in live 7 with the sampler and drum racks. I don't think I've ever crash on 8.2 so far.
But looking back and waiting for something like 8.2, I could say the software issue for windows 7 64 bit and live 8 were to blame for most of the crashes I went through. Reaper, Kontakt 4, Emulator X3, and Reason 4 all ran great before Live 8.2/latest windows 7 updates.
It's water under the bridge because I am happy with my current live setup now. I learned to wait a while when the next live comes out, demo for 30 days and go from there. Sure, 64 bit will probably motivate me to max out my ram to 24GB because I am crazy. What I do want is being able to use software that is fairly stable after it has gone out of the beta testing phase. Hell, I could of just continued to work on my laptop and building tracks from there because live 7 worked wonders for me. Thats what happens when you jump the gun!
hope that clarifies things.
