You're talking about mapping encoders to the knobs on Rack Macros?
Exactly, or well just skipping through the knobs in ableton via arrows eventually.
But on first sight, mapping those to rack macros seems the easiest solution for now.
(I'm not really into Ableton's Python API programming wise, so I have no clue what the limitations are

)

"locking controls" and being able to still navigate around is definitely part of the Griid philosophy. From the start it's been really important for us to provide FAST navigation to anywhere you want in the Live set
I saw that on the grid itself (plus the great speed when browsing through the set, which I guess comes from pre-buffering the clip-view

)
Anyway, thinking of these knob-controls, different solutions come to mind, but I guess the tradeoff between flexibility, accessibility and speed has gotta be somewhere in the middle as
sperating the knobs completely from the Grid-View may be dangerous to the effect that many artist use effects for transitions between clips... but then again this is contrary to my original suggestions of switching single grid-columns to knobs as you probably wanna trigger a different clip while having access to the knobs at the same time.

Awesome guys! Very sexy

Looking forward to get my hands on this stuff.
Since your asking, this is what I personally would like on a touch platform:
Chanel Strip style editing:
8 sends, 8 macros, volume fades and master fade, on one page.
And device, track and transport buttons like APC.
The absolutely coolest would be to check out Native Kontrols APC presets, and do something similar. (he might want to work with you guys btw)

here are some vidz of my tests, i improved it since but not made new vidz yet:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hgf7nXyLGJ8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mM7IGu9P9Eg
you can see it on the mixer @ 2:08 in first vid, or @4:07 they are swichs but also faders, and if pressing preset they toggle to display a bank choice, then picking a preset request live values so all squares reupdate, then a new Y action will inc/dec the values
if keeping pressed and moving (even out of the tiny boundaries, so screen space gain) , or toggle if short.
Ok I totally get it. Yes, I love that dual function object. Just a simple square, and with relative motion becomes a relative fader. The drawback that you can NOT have it on the edges of the screen is a real challenge. Good job with your implementation!

Hehehehe welcome to my daily world.
Food for though though, thanks for the feedback

One more thing: would be nice to have layout preset quick buttons, like Sonar X1:
8 buttons where you can store up to 8 different layouts.

Thanks for the videos in your previous post btw. Good tip, will go check those out now..
About the layouts. Interesting idea, what would be different in the layouts? Have you seen in the new version (Griid 1.10) you can independantly zoom in both tracks and scenes?

same here, same here..
i might come up with more after my brain recovered from this maths for computerscience/dsp-programming study session today
one more thing:
a full-screen encoder-view option wont be that bad after all in cause someone's using more than one ipad.

how about a crossfader & user definable buttons/sliders at the bottom of the griid view
hey global goon!
crossfader: can't say exactly when, but it's a great suggestion and definitely on my mind.
user definable buttons/slides at the bottom: what kind of things would you want those to do?
thanks!
nick
The user definable buttons/slider could just send midi ccs which users could use however they want
Like a mini version of touch-osc

Cool!
What I mean is if you add more futures, it could be cool to have layout presets.
Example:
Preset A: mixer + 8 sends x 8 tracks
Preset B: Clip grid + mixer
Preset C: Clip grid + device control

Totally. There's so many things to keep in mind when designing Griid and that's a really good one: make sure it's cool for somebody performing in Ableton with a single iPad screen, but also make sure the design is optimal for setups with different pieces of gear.
I really like the encoder-view idea (see earlier posts in this thread) but the issue with them is the if the object is relative, you can't get a full range if it's placed on the edge of the screen (let alone in the corner!)

Could you elaborate on that?
"Relative" in what way?

Damn, im getting more ideas:
What about flip-up window hot keys in the corners, similare to Lives gui?
But you could have other stuff there, like this:
Top right corner: clip grid/clip notes
Bottom right corner: device control show/hide
Bottom left corner: mixer show/hide
Top left corner: transport, nudge, tempo and all that on top of Abletons gui: show/hide
Inside Cliip it could have similar corner hide/show functions.

Ok, not 100% sure I'm getting your idea but this is what I'm taking away from your description:
- Full screen grid of encoders.
- Press an encoder then drag (either up/down, left/right, or circular) to change the value. Value is changed relative to start point, meaning you can press the encode, move left and it brings down the value in Ableton (whether mixer device or whatever). There is no "absolute point".
This is really cool if you have space on all sides of the encoder, BUT unusable if the encoder is up against an edge of the iPad screen. Does that make sense?

Ah ha! You mean similar to the velocity area in Cliip?
One thing I love about iPad controllers is that because it's software, it's infinitely reconfigurable. I guess the same way VSTs is like "one machine with hundreds of sound producing bits of software", the multitouch screen is essentially software.. Bbecause this is all relatively new territory (we have been using the mouse + keyboard + display screen paradigm for decades!) it has yet to be defined what's the best way to navigate with your fingers. Which also makes developing controllers so exciting in this climate! hehe, in any case, yeah, I like the idea of specific directions for specific objects.
