What are the best headphones for mixing?

I get very bored with all the "don't mix on cans" shit... for some of us it's the only option some of the time - y'know... real people who have neighbours and children and stuff...

Of course, for a final mixdown you need to reference on something more reliable, but for working late at night, headphones are just fine.

i know i am in the same situation, you can try to isolate your room, with sound treatment panels, but it may still be not enough....
the problem is that the best inspiration hits me at 3:00 am.

i`m getting my DENON AH-D2000 in about 7 days i hope.

My own personal opinion is that the result is what matters and if you can get a well-mixed result from headphones, there is no problem in using headphones to mix. I do see the argument against it but, again, results mean more than prescriptions.

Apologies if my previous comment sounded prescriptive, I didn't have much time to elaborate when I posted that. It was just a comment on the general opinion.

I have a pair of senheiser 800s and I swear they're decepticon technology. They give you the ability to see thru sound. Truly amazing.
If the NS-10s were headphones, they'd be 800s.

I'm sofaking tired with all the "you can't do this like that or you have to do that like this".
Do whatever you like. You'll figure out how to get the sound you're looking for, eventually.
I think once you start following very rigid guidelines, it hinders the creative process. Don't be afraid to be different. I live outside the box and I love it.

By far the best mixing headphone I have owned and used, flat neutral and well balanced
That as far as headphones go are as honest as it get's
They do not have that Hi-Fi sound that flatters and gives a false impression
whilst still having a fairly accurate bass response. they also go really loud
there relied on as an industry standard in many many studios around the world

and last but not least they have been around now for 16 years and are very much tried and tested

For what it's worth - I only recently had the resources to purchase a pair of studio monitors. Prior to that, I was doing all of my work + sound design on a pair of Sony 7509-HD headphones. Certainly the most expensive headphones I've ever purchased, having an acceptable frequency response. Once I started mixing with monitors - EVERYTHING changed. You become far more sensitive to levels, frequencies and the stereo field. By comparison my headphone mixes were flat, overpowering and lacking in all dynamics.

My best advice - work with the monitors if you can - you need to give your ears the chance to "breath" just like your music should. Making a great mix by clamping speakers on to your ear isn't impossible, but it will take a lot of practice.

I've compared the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro, the AKG K271 MKII and the Sony MDR 7506.
And I went straight for the Sony..

The Beyerdynamic sounded very nice, the low end sounded really tight and full.
But i think it sounded a bit too colored. Like it enhanced the low end to make it sound good.
Which is what you're not looking for when you wanna mix.

The AKG sounded not good at all to me.. At least compared to the others..

The Sony sounded very open.. A little less low end then the beyer, but still nice and tight..
The mids and especially the highs sounded so pretty..
You can hear every detail on it..
Switching between the beyer and the sony, I could hear a lot more detail on the Sony..
Seemed like the Beyer buried things underneath the low end (If you know what I mean).

I've got a pair of MDR 7506 for only 100 Euro, that's about 135 US Dollar..

They're very nice, with a fairly flat response for a very decent price.

I'd recommend them.

+1, i bought these as a spare set and i love them...great value and pretty flat response, translate way better than they should imo

Mixing with cans is not ideal, just make sure your checking back on monitors when you get the chance or you are A/Bing with a commercial track as a reference

^ i have the Audio Technica ATH M50 and LOVE those.

i also have Beyer Dynamic 770 and love those too.

i like the sound of the AT set just a bit better, but the comfort level of the Beyer Ds is phenomenal, especially if you plan on wearing them for any length of time. it's something else to consider i know, but plastic coating can make your ears hot.
