Yeah drag samples onto the Impulse pads, Drum Rack is locked in Live Lite. Lame I know. You might need to find some drum samples, there are lots of free ones out there that you could start with. Have fun, don't let the technical side get you down, it gets easier.

Okay cool. I'll see about that when I get on it. Have any workflow tips?

Well, once you've chosen the samples you want to use and drag them into Impulse, it's good to learn shortcuts/shortkeys for writing beats on the piano roll midi editor.

Command 2 makes the grid bigger, Command 1 makes the grid smaller.

Command 4 toggles the grid on/off so you can move a midi note slightly ahead or behind the beat. Even easier, if you click on the note and then hit command, it will override the grid. Select note, hit Command, then: drag left or right to move the note w/o grid - grab edge to change note length w/o grid - drag up or down to change the velocity (this way you can save space by hitting the little arrow at the bottom to hide the velocity lane).

Tab switches from Session View to Arrangement View, while Command Tab switches between Instrument View (your Impulse) and the Midi editor. Drag the border of the midi editor window up or down to resize it, it helps to make it bigger for writing beats.

To shape the drum sounds, play with the envelope (attack, decay, sustain, release or ADSR) and the velocity of each of your samples in Impulse.

Read the manual, there's a page that shows all of the shortcuts - these are VERY important because they make things easier. Watch the videos on the Ableton site or search Youtube & Vimeo. There are lessons included in the software also - in Live, click on Help and select Help View, there you will find the included lessons.

I also recommend reading this blog, start at the bottom of the page, he does one tip a day.
