Basically...
  • music is free (if you are prepared to wait, search, make contacts)
    software is free (ditto)
    films are free too incidentally (ditto)
    DJs are free (because someone will always do it for the love)
you pay for
  • support
    the latest features and bug fixes
    the live sound experience
    the club experience
    and the cinema experience
warez have made modern music making the anarchic non-elitist world it is.
95%+ of todays software-based producers started on cracks or other licence-breaching software installations

As time goes on and I buy more software, I'm actually getting less sympathetic with software companies over warez.

I've bought software before that was buggy, and got zero useful support from the manufacturer, so tried to take it back to the retailer only to be told you can't do this with software.

Of course the reason for this is when you buy software you don't really 'own' it, you just buy a licence to use it. It's ironic that many software companies' argument against piracy compares it to stealing a physical item, while their license agreements themselves put it in another category where none of the rules of physical items seem to apply. The software industry really needs to address this in my opinion.
