cheers again

as usual im having trouble getting my head round the midi - its a 13 pin out midi guitar specific connector so i need to sort some kind of converter out for that, my usual methods of trial and error will have to lead me to a solution - bit frustrating though. i went down denmark street today (guitar central in london) and no-one knew anything about it.... :(

coming from someone who doesnt play guitar or bass to any degree (which is partly the reason i had one made with one string) as a regular bass sound i think it sounds mighty fine through the guitar amp i have....kind of soft and warm then plenty of distortion when i whack it - if that makes any sense

as regards pitch and suchlike - a discussion with the feller who made it for me said that an e string would suit it best, if i remember rightly. so thats what i went for

costs? - well, expensive-ish, but only a couple of hundred quid more than my initial total guess, so not too bad for a complete hand crafted total one off

i'll post some sounds when i get the midi thing sussed, or when ive used it in a tune or something

I believe the 50 may have been discontinued. If you can find one get it. It's the most flexible (via the software editor) G2M box I've found and I use it on the midi side of my Chapman Stick.

The 13-pin cable needs to be plugged into something like the Axon 50 that I mentioned or another guitar to midi box that accepts a 13-pin connection like the Roland GI-20. These boxes don't have their own sounds and are only converters. The alternative is to get something like the GR-20 or GR-33 that are pedals that have their own sounds and can also send midi thru.

The other alternative would be to make some DYI cable adapter that would get the channel of the one string out of the cable and send it down a regular 7-pin midi cable. The 13-pin cable is made for guitar midi pickups like the Roland GK-3. There are six pins, one for each string of the guitar and then the remaining seven are for the standard midi cable spec. My guess is that your instrument is set for the single string to send on one of the channels (or maybe they did some voodoo routing and have it sending to all?).

One other thing to be aware of is that a bass guitar E-string is not an ideal midi controller. They've gotten closer in recent years with some of the pickups but there are some problems with bass midi due to the inherent physics of a large string. What it can amount to is latency between the attack and the triggering. I don't know, Squarepusher seems to do just fine but I haven't looked into what exact kit he's using and how he's using it these days.

Because I had a pickup laying around the last few month, yesterday I decided to put a diddley bow together. Wasn't shure if that works ... but it does! Today I took a little video and a short sound-example. Maybe that helps.
