Interestingly, with loopback (over IAC) I get the same low jitter as with external source.
Could it be that your loopback method doesn't generate proper timestamps?

On mac timestamps can be observed with the app 'MIDI Monitor', but don't know about pc.

didn't had in mind that you can see timestamps with a normal midi monitor. I use midi ox for this and I have timestamps. I played around with some settings and noticed that using the mme midi-port is seems to be better than directmusic regarding jitter. but I have to run a couple of more tests to be 100% sure. booth are window driver models, so I guess you don't know too much about them.

regarding the ableton loopback, I noticed that I get a latency equal to the buffersize. using 512 as buffersize I get a global latency from 25 ms. the midi is also shifted 25 ms. it seems that live delays the midi out in relation to the audio latency.

I can confirm those latency values in relation to the audio buffer. The manual explains that midi latency is introduced by design to minimize jitter. For me this seems to work well as I get jitter only about 1 ms. Much higher jitter would indicate that something doesn't work as intended.

the apple os delivers midi data much better than 1 ms jitter.. ableton live is the jitter generator on an apple..

That's true under ideal conditions but depends on cpu load, unfortunately.

seems to be totally allwright for cpu loads up to 70% on other software.. at least big realtor ensembles sync perfectly fine..and on logic projekts that allmost collapss the computer you still can record oprecise midi from your keyboard..semms that there are ways to deal with it that ableton just dont knows. Or has choosen to ignore.
