I highly doubt that's true. It looks like they are getting better at making their laptops look different, but there are MANY notebook resellers that customize their systems. Just the fact that it took them a long time to build it doesn't really prove anything. I really doubt that they have gotten into the research and design of their very own line of laptops. The basic guts still only come from a few manufacturers (Clevo, Compal, etc...)

Of course, at the prices they charge, they should be manufacturing their own notebooks.

powernotebooks.com and discountlaptops.com always are a good starting point for me to check out what the latest is. Then there's also pro-star.com and sager notebooks as well.
The question is not whether or not you are influenced, but rather what it is that influences you.

In Apple, the design and look are a free bonus. :D You pay for Superperformance and stability :D . Lets not start...I also have a pc.
i don't want a start a platform debate either, but they do spend quite a bit on design. i don't have a problem with that - the results are (this coming from a pc user) stunning. pc manufacturers are only just realizing that people give a crap about what their computer looks like.

however, unless you are referring to user experience, 'superperformance' is way too strong a word to describe Mac performance - Macs have consistently lagged behind pcs in overall power (a Sound on Sound article settled the matter for me), and even when they debuted the 'world's fastest computer,' that was debunked pretty quickly (tho we don't exactly have a lot of 64 bit apps out there, do we?).

I wasn't. I was responding to another post. If you read my other posts, I say that I'm not buying another Alienware.

Actually, Aleinware does design/build their own systems as they are building an Engineering Supercomputer. I Know that all the manufacuters from the links you posted are basically the same computer :: I used to own a Sager. The Alienware laptops are thinner in form...no way it could be the same.

i dunno, alienware stuff seems rather overpriced.

lets do a comparison:

Alienware Sentia
Warranty: 1-Year AlienCare Toll-Free 24/7 Phone Support with Onsite Service
Windows® XP Home Edition SP2
Pentium® M 745 1.8GHz 2MB L2 Cache 400MHZ FSB
802.11g wifi
512MB DDR - 1x512MB SO-DIMM
80GB 5400 RPM ATA100
12.1" Wide-XGA 1280x800 LCD Display
Intel® Extreme Graphics 2 Technology
24x10x24 CD-RW / 8X DVD Combo Drive
Ethernet, 56k Modem, 3 USB 2.0, 1 firewire, 1 pcmcia

$1829 after "$99 off instant savings"

vs.

HP DV1000
Warranty: 1-Year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair extended service plan
Windows® XP Home Edition SP2
Pentium® M 745 1.8GHz 2MB L2 Cache 400MHZ FSB
802.11g wifi
512MB DDR - 1x512MB SO-DIMM
80GB 5400 RPM ATA100
14" Wide-XGA 1280x768 LCD Display
Intel® Extreme Graphics 2 Technology
24x10x24 CD-RW / 8X DVD Combo Drive
Ethernet, 56k Modem, 3 USB 2.0, 1 firewire, 1 pcmcia

$1499 after "$50 off instant savings", not including a mail in $50 rebate.

i know some people prefer the look of the Alienware. i personally think its a little too modern. Like it will look like an 8 year old laptop, in 5 years.

but the DV1000 is quite a looker too, and i think the look would stay fresh for years to come:

to each his own though....

I couldn't even get an Atlhon XP 64 bit notebook in South Africa where I live, so I thought F--- it! I'm importing one from the States and it's costing me half the price of comparable centrino's here, including shipping and import duties. What a win!
