I can record midi cc's if a vst has its own midi learn functionality?

But I cannot record midi cc's using live's internal midi (ctrl + m)?

Is there really no way to access live's global midi? Can I not route a track somewhere, or route to midi ox or something?

In this post it seems the person has managed to get live devices to record in session view, or are they wrong? http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27882

How do you "double up" the midi signal as they suggest using midi ox, or midiyoke? The image in the post above seems to down so I cant see how they do it.
You can only record controller movements of MIDI CCs in Live's session view with third party plugins that have their own midi learn system. So you can't even use that workaround for Live's own native devices! You CANNOT record parameter automation of anything in Live's session view (in other words, you can't use Live's midi mapping system to map a knob and record the movement).

The annoying thing about this too is that once you record MIDI cc data into a clip, moving that parameter conflicts with the cc envelope and it jumps around, rather than behaving like an ableton control that has a clip envelope, where you can still move the control and the envelope is relative to the position of the control while tweaking.

There's also the IAC/Yoke virtual MIDI port workaround though that also causes various issues & complications.

Hi,

Thanks for all your answers, they have certainly helped me achieve my destination.

To let you know... I have fixed this problem. I can now record in session view with any VST, VSTi. I can not use lives own devices to record in session view, but for anything else, it's open season!

If anyone wants to know how to do this please let me know. I have gone through some quite extreme workarounds to achieve this, because I used touchosc that doesnt have any midi in-built capability. Using, pure-data, maxforlive, some live devices and wotnot.

Cheers for all your helps - I finally achieved my goal after months of workarounds!

Now to start playin!

it's post like this that remind me not to check the forum right before I start to work on music. uhh what a buzzkill.

@op. glad it worked out for you and for the rest of ya one mans solution is another mans reason for hating live  could never hate live though.

Assuming you're using an iOS device and not an Android, the latest versiOn of touchOSC does have built-in MIDI capability.

Anyway, Live's inability to record realtime automation in session view is one of the many reasons that I use Maschine instead as my production tool.

I see this is a long time issue. Anyway, I've postid this as a feature request http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=164883

I only don't understand why should that take a complete rewrite of the entire program. It seems there are a few workarounds that take no computer science degree to make it work, like the one which I've used is this one here: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb09/a ... h_0209.htm
But then that's pretty sub optimal because you need double the amount of tracks and so if you want to do something live with an APC you have to go mad scrolling back and forth.

I only skimmed the thread, but I do this all the time. Has no one suggested...

1. Install virtual MIDI driver
2. Set that driver to Remote
3. Set MIDI controller to Track In
4. Make MIDI track with Input set to the Controller, and output set to the Virtual MIDI port

Automation should now pass through that channel for recording, then passed on to Live for automation, correct?

link to "virtual Midi Driver" please.

This seems sound advice as a workaround solution. There is currently a Max for Live device that does something similar. Never heard of virtual midi driver though, and a search brought up results but not what I expected.

Well, for PC there's MIDI Yoke here: http://www.midiox.com/
On Mac, it's built in...the IAC Driver in the Audio MIDI setup.

If you have M4L, I've made a device that records automations to clips.
