I think once you get an iPad there's no turning back, it becomes the coolest thing ever.
EVER!
still holding out but seeing new uses for one every day and not just music stuff. coworker showed me an app where you basically have a whiteboard on an iPad, which you can then print or save off somewhere. he scored a touch screen compatible stylus for it too.
EVER!

alright there LSZjr.
apps that do this and that are cool... iPads are cool, but it doesn't change the fact that no apps can tell you your finger its in the right place without looking... or hearing, but face it, we're talking about using one as a musical device... some pre-recorded chick voice that says "your finger is currently on rotary 2" ain't gonna cut it. so what does that leave you with in the smokey, dark, strobe lit... face of the void?
in the immortalized words of Humpty "Alright stop what you're doin, cuz i'm about to ruin the image and the style that you're used to..."

don't make me get an iPad, just to shake things up around here.
I imagine you could keep your pinky on the frame or on the corner of the frame and stay in the right area. if I was connected to a PA using an iPad as a controller I'd be hardcore e-mail checking, there's no way I'd 'Depeche Mode' the controls in a critical situation.
what I don't dig is the "YOU MUST USE WHAT I HAVE BECAUSE IT'S AWESOME AND I LOVE IT AND HAVE NEVER TRIED ANYTHING ELSE BUT YOU SUCK AND MY DEVICES ARE THE BEST" mentality. the people that don't realize it's just a toy with a tiny microcontroller on it can't help themselves, 'musicians' aren't always tech savvy.
maybe tomorrow we switch sides, you can go on about how cool it is and I ran rail against it.

apps cost dough too - I think I would end up buying all sorts of shit for it.
You can't beat knobs and dials for playing whether in the studio or out and if you add Hanz Petrov's sequencer you're laughing.
If you have a laptop (as i do) then I can't see the attraction of the iPad at all and I love Apple stuff.

i'm considering this.
however, buy the iPad tonight and give it to me (i'll meet you at the BART station). then tomorrow i can wave it at my monitor and curse all the pitiful fools that don't have one while i talk smack about how much better it is than anything ever.
EVER!

So tangible, so delicious.
Yet painfully so.

its true though.. im glad you guys see it my way
but lettuce be cereal. My argument about touchscreen vs physical controls. Never did I say anything negative about physical controls, I just said that you can't say one is better for the other due to a learning curve. I guess since the touchscreen device is an iPad, people want to get EXTRA mad and type in CAPS and enable the FONT SIZE BUTTON about it due to their inner anger for apple i guess? They hate apple products because the women that reject them would rather look at an iPad? I don't know really. that's just me speculating.
But a certain few decided to go off on a tangent and throw in some cute dialogue instead of making this a respectable debate.
Nonetheless, I agree with certain aspects of the whole "live" use and trying to reach in the dark. Yes I see how that would be troublesome; however, in a studio capacity, I feel that the iPad (OR ANY RESPECTABLE touch screen device -- that's for you Tone Deft

) can compete with a physical controller with the right app.
Thank you and good night. Its been a pleasure. BAM!

most musicians are closed minded about music outside the genre they're in. you think jazz or classical or metal players give a crap about four on the floor house or dubstep or IDM? do you know anyone that's a professional musician? I don't mean a DJ or mouse jockey knob twister. generally they're painfully snobbish and closed minded.
it reads like a nice idea but it's completely hippy dippy myopic bullshit.
just sayin'...

not sure what you mean in your address to me, doesn't matter. iPad threads are funny, for reasons you noted.
perplex wrote:you can't say one is better for the other due to a learning curve.
I just think it's funny when people insist that someone should use Device X without actually knowing how the other guy uses Device Y. I imagine that there are iPad users that haters could watch and completely change their minds about it. on the flip side I'm sure there are iPad users fumbling all over themselves.
judge your own studio, let others choose for themselves.
in cycling we call this 'ride your own bike.' piss off telling someone else what to do or what to use. we don't actually know each other, we don't know how we all work.

Who the hell is insisting that someone should use any device? I am merely stating one shouldnt be so quick to rule out touch controls over the more traditional means. And when I "attempted" to argue my point, the Anti-apple brigade shined in divine glory and all was lost in the spirit of respectable debate.
btw if iPad threads are deemed funny by you.....please dont suggest me any sitcoms
just sayin'

I only laugh because I'm tired of crying. thought I was playing the thread pretty middle of the road wishy washy.
the one thing iPad control has over tactile controllers is the way WiFi smooths the controller data making Live sound MUCH warmer.
there aren't any currently running sitcoms that I watch. TV isn't appealing to me these days. Tour De France starts soon, that should be good. Contador's got the heat on him this year.
