@roozy:

read this:
Yamaha HS50M - The new NS-10M?
http://www.moozek.com/2008/01/09/super- ... ew-ns-10m/

The HS50m are flatter than the NS-10m.
Conclusion

Sound: 9
Usefulness: 10
Build quality: 7

Pros: They are mixing workhorses! The future industry standard, and successor of the NS-10M.
Cons: If you’re one of those who hate NS-10, either change the way you think, or look elsewhere. Yamaha quality control could also improve.

Thanks for everyone's input. I have decided to go with the Sennheiser's. As for studio monitors, the Yamaha HS50M does look promising.

Hard to compare production cans with djing ones, but i'd go for something closed and fairly neutral, perhaps HD25s? The higher end DJ ones like HDJ1000's have a very powerful boost to emphasise the mid-kick so they'd likely colour your production quality too much. For djing here's a list of good dj headphones that may help.

Beyerdynamic DT100's, though I wouldn't recommend if you are trying to monitor in a very loud venue, as in my experience, you don't hear too much over the PA. For monitoring in a studio, they are great - fairly flat response and you can use them for hours with little or no ear fatigue (ear fatigue is a point I have not seen mentioned yet, but if you are likely to be using them for hours in one sitting, it is an extremely important one). They also have a very similar response to my Genelec's, so switching from monitors to headphones when it starts getting late is not a total buzz kill.

roozy wrote:shoulda prolly specified.. for production use. yeah i took a look at the hd-25s. obviously i would use my studio monitors, but for late night producing, headphones work much better as i dont want to be blasting shit at 3am. i've also taken a look at the TMA-1's. should i look for headphones with a flatter response? something for the studio + a little on the road listening would be nice.
Forget TMA unless you need it for fun listening or fashion accessory. I really wanted to like them but compared to HD25 they lack precision, definition though for simple listening pleasure might be better choice, sound very silky, pleasant. Not for DJ or studio.
