RIP Plastic MacBook

2007 2ghz core 2 duo here. Added more ram, a bigger hard drive, upgrade to Snow Leopard. Still kicking it.

I love the way the Airs look but they are too limited with storage in terms of what I need. Thinking about getting a 13" pro and swapping the optical for a small ssd with the OS and apps. But damn the Airs are good looking.

I love my Air and they make the regular MacBooks look like unwieldy tanks, but they are limited. Mine is mainly a Traktor machine.

I predict once they come out with a 15" model and the price of SSD drives come way down the MBP's days will be numbered.

Perhaps you forget the astonishing levels of SHIT that all of the competitors were putting out when the white MacBook first appeared....and well after.



I'm looking at mine right now, and the design is still excellent and holds up quite well.

This I pretty much agree with.....but there are still several little design details that have carried over...

Long story short, if you lined up a white MacBook next to anything Apple has created in the past year the design continuity would be quite evident. One could easily tell that they came from the same designer/company (even if you covered up the logo).

Again, that kind of design continuity/excellence is pretty much UNHEARDOF in the rest of the tech market...where they feel another major SHIT redesign needs to happen almost every quarter.

do thunderbolt harddrives exist yet?
got a bad jones for that air/thunderbolt monitor combo they're pushin, a really bad jones... I'm running live right now off of a core 2duo old ass blackbook with 2gigs ram, shouldn't the new air slay my little beast?

It's not the processor. It's the smallish drive if you're talking audio software with plugs, sample libraries, and high quality audio output. Also the RAM is hardwired to the motherboard along with the drive so it's not a simple DYI upgrade. They aren't very future proof for power users.

But that's why you get the Thunderbolt display and put that stuff in a regular old FW800 drive and plug it into the display.

But yeah, unless you're planning on bringing the Air with you in a backpack everywhere you go, it really doesn't make sense for audio. Since you're working in such a way that you're anchored to the 27" display, you can't really do mobile stuff. A quad-core MBP makes a lot more sense.

But I'm the type who would want to bring the computer with me everyday, so I am slightly tempted by the MacBook Air. I'd just have to limit myself to stripped down audio and video work. But I'm not going to bite. It's awesome that the MacBook Air got a Thunderbolt port. Now we just need more dedicated Thunderbolt hardware, and a bit more muscle under the hood (500GB and 8GB RAM). Then Jobs will get yet another huge chunk of my credit card.

The curb appeal of the Airs makes people forget about the point of a laptop, portability. “I’ll just plug in this monitor, and this drive, and this interface….” If you need to do all that then you should just buy a more robust MBP.

I got my Air with no intention of it ever being my main computer. I have it loaded with minimal music software (which still takes up a lot of drive space) compared to my MBP. The portability is great as well it putting limitations on me I couldn’t do with my own free will. The only possible downside is I use it for gigs and I’m paranoid as Hell about somebody walking off with it.

At the time I had money for such extravagance but I would never look to one to replace a MBP at this point. If you only have the money to buy a new computer every 3-4 years then an Air shouldn’t be on your option list.

Had a black one before ( late 2006) it was a tank! I loved that one so much. My wife has a white one and it'S still chugging along!
