I deal with this problem. It is necesary to turn off midi input or output from your sound card

I try to end process but it will not work. Well at least I'm not the only one. I was just about to start a thread called ...

Basically what I will do is turn off any MIDI devices, go into the task manager and then hit "end process". I turn my MIDI devices back on and wait 8-10 minutes for Live to "release" itself from the list of running processes. Pain in the ass and a HUGE NEWBIE TYPE FLAW that should have been dealt with 6 versions ago. No excuse for this. None.

Yes, fine solution, we already know that.

Just add that after turning off your midi device you have to wait around 5 minutes or more to continue working.

It seems this might not be a Live problem but an OS / driver problem. Frustating as all get out I'm sure.

Ive been p**sed off with this for ages.

After a long time of messing around, ive discovered/learnt the best way to deal with it is just to restart. Not ideal, but quicker than pi**ing about in task manager and it still doesnt work.

SSD System driver is pretty quick for restarting tho.

Touch wood, the more recent versions crash less... turning off over-clocking on my CPU also helped a lot.

YMMV, etc.

I reckon something has seriously gone awry with memory management in PC v8.2.6.
I have had an un-merciful amount of crashes recently. Far exceeding my already generous expectations.
Yesterday, I was unable to open a set after another series of crashes. I'm usually able to recover my work by dragging (one by one) the various Audio and MIDI files from the crashed set into a new set. Even with my Custom VST Path disabled, dragging one of the MIDI Files into the New Set Crashed it every time.
I discovered recently how to restart the Audio Engine in Task manager but trying to Kill Ableton as a process takes several minutes of waiting.
I've also concluded that restarting my Laptop is the only way to retain some kind of flow to my work.

Using Live 8.2.1 and M-Audio Fast Track Pro ..
Cannot start up live again until rebooting.. Really annoying!


I notice it's often with fast track pro users..
Maybe a bug in combination with Live 8..??

I too grow tired of this problem

same here lots of out of memory crashes.

I get it sometimes from auditioning sounds sin the live browser

i have a
Novation SL keyboard
Akai LPD8
Launchpad
Nocturn
(its a shame Automap isn't compatible with live)

Soundcard is HDSP 9632.


Does any of those things affect the problem?
...is a reboot the best option?

I know this thread has been dead for a while, but I always said that when I were able to troubleshoot the 'Ableton Live staying in memory after crash' thing, I was going to post my experience; and so I am doing now.

Ok, thing that got this issue resolved was changing my audio interface + drivers. I think the culprit was the E-MU drivers not integrating well with Windows 7. The drivers were dated, and it was not worth to risk the system stability by using the latest E-MU beta drivers that never made it to being complete + lost support. So I instead changed my interface to a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, which so far so good; whenever my Ableton 9 64-bit crashes (most of the time due to bridging of 32 bit plugins!) it goes out memory in about 5 seconds, I am able to restart very quickly and recover my stuff without it being an ordeal. Although the specs of the mic-pres of the E-MU Tracker-Pre seem to be better, the trouble of having to restart the system was making me lose the mojo of composing. I first thought it had to do with Ableton's software, then thought 'heck this software is used Live!, instability is out of the question for the software to have had such a success'.

I am probably resurrecting an old debate, but would want to hear any comments.
