It's more versatile than serato (you can spin nearly every mediatype with the vinyl), a lot cheaper, and can be used as VST plugin (pluggo type) in Live. If i would go to the digital domain (i'm spinning Vinyl nearly 10 years) i would go this way.....

I am also teaching music production (Mr. Carvalho, see you in Mallorca soon)

and most of my students are DJs. The older they are and the more years they have been spinning, the more they ditch Live for DJing. They have become conservative and their minds are closed to new ideas. Specially they can't bear that beat-syncing (that technique that took them years to master) is not an issue anymore.

Sincerely, I'm pretty confident they feel outdated are are afraid that "anyone" can spin without having to spend a few years practising the vinyl stuff. I reply to them that the same happened a few years ago with the virtual studio. In the eighties, you had to scratch your head and spend many years mastering your tools if you wanted to make electronic music. Besides, the equipment was expensive and you needed a "big room" to place it. In the seventies you "had to be a keyboard player" if you wanted to make electronic music. In the sixties you had to be a scientist.... Now, any guy with a portable and Ableton Live can do serious stuff. Is that a problem for me? Hell, no!. The more we are, the more fun we will have! Let's not forget that MUSIC is the goal, not turntable spinning, keyboard playing nor mouse fiddling.

Live is the way of the future for anyone creative. As already mentioned, blending/eq/fading is tooooo boring either to perform and to listen.

After 17 years playing vinyls and in the last years finall scratch i finally decide move to ableton, i sell my truntables, sell all my hardware synths and grooveboxes and all my studio gear......now just use ableton + imac 24 + good studio monitors, and soon my standalone controller monotouchlive (www.monotouchlive.com)

After use ableton now for little more of 1 year, i can say.....i re-born like DJ, like producer, like HUMAN jajaja

Ableton its amazing tool if you leave your mind fly !!
Now ading my own productions to my live sets, and perform some tunes live from live : )

I think abletion reinvented the STUDIO, and make a reality the dream of too many Dj producers......

Ableton not born like DJING tool....but i never see one software can be used in to many different and cool ways, for produce, or live acts, or djing..........ableton its now part of history, like turntables technics 1200 : )

Ableton its the present and future tool for musician or djs, or anyone, lol, Ableton broke all limits........
The limit its just your mind : )

You can use stand alone, or combinated with your turntables, or instruments or anyway you want.

i like dj's and what they do.

It would seem to me that Dj's and composers are totally different people on the whole, but we need both to succeed.

The composers job is far more difficult creativly wheras the Dj's job is all about having big balls. All i wish is that Dj's gave a little more respect to the musicans whose music they are spinning. Dj's are like gods to the public, wheras the people who write the music are deemed nerdy (like myself

) i think Dj's should be a little more humble. but then they probably wouldnt make such good Dj's. oh well.

IMO, DJs are like cheerleaders. Their job is to pump up the crowd. It's a skill.

The talent, however, lies in the production of the material they're using.

It's all good, though. They can and often do benefit each other.

What I like about Live is that the talented producers can now DJ their own material interactively and live. And those DJs with talent can produce their own material. It's a win-win situation for those with talent!

The two go hand in hand and are quite often one and the same. Modern dance music would be nowhere without the DJ.

As well as having the qualities above, more importantly the DJ needs to know music back to front. Especially the music they collect and present. It's an under-rated skill. There are many many rubbish djs about.

And where would movies be without projectionists?
