Have certain drums playing the fifth of the root is even better, especially with bassy sounds. A great trick for getting a deeper sounding kick is by doubling the kick, and then pitching it down 5 semitones (which would be the first kick's fifth, e.g. if the first kick was a C3, the doubled kick would be a G2).

but could that not muddy up the low end?

like the kick playing a chord?
