I think anyone should try the demo first, not simply to check full system compatibility (and plugins etc) but also to see if they actually like the features and workflow. If not there's a pile of other alternatives right? There's Live 7, without half the features that make Live 8 so great. Or there's Cubase, Logic, etc - ALL of which also have bugs, dissatisfied users, etc. And all of which seem to me to be stuck in the late 20th century right now...
And I don't think you or anyone should spit in the face of Ableton on account of the fact they were honest and open enough to make a statement about bug fixing 18 months ago, which they have FULLY followed through. Personally I take my hat off to them.
