I use mine for production rather than performance, I'm fully satisfied with mine. I use it in Ableton 8 and in Sonar X1. I like it in both instances.

I think the APC 40 is still one of the best Midi controllers ever made.
Of course only if you use with Ableton.
In my set up it's the only unchangeable component.
A Mdi keyboard? I can use tjis or maybe that one.
But the flexibility and veratile usage of the APC is still awesome.
I think about changing some things sometimes in my setup but the APC40!?
Never considered!

I've had an APC40 since day 1. Chances are you read some of my bitching, but this does not mean it's not a great controller. Nowadays, you have stuff like Hanz Pertov's script, Native Kontrol, and Max for Live with a few patches out there that really bring the APC40 to life.

If it's just you and your laptop, you will love adding an APC40.

Comparing it to Maschine is not really fair. They are 2 different animals, intergrated with 2 different softwares.

Look, all the APC40 ever needed was an in depth, user friendly editor that built out midi remote scripts. Where you could make layouts of Step Sequencers, Note modes, Midi or CC combinations, and for crying out loud the ability to choose wether or not a button was momentary or a toggle. Seriously Akai/Ableton???

Dont get me wrong I love my APC40 and M4L and learning remote scripting, etc etc etc. But sometimes I just wanna say fcuk all that open up a simple editor and change Track ones mute button to be a send C and D momentary switch, instead of building a M4L device and forever de-bugging Live because of it.

OH forgot to mention, why an 8x5 matrix when they were obviously working with Novation on the Launchpad simultaneously? That just seems ridiculous to me.

probably because it's big enough as it is. what was the OP said about all the bitching? I doubt Ableton was going to Akai to tell them what Novation was doing and vice versa. as for the size, check peoples' studio pics to see how it fits.

APC40 - studio controller.

Maschine - performance machine.

my APC40 lets me use Live without ever touching the mouse. one cool feature I like is that you can hold down a Track Selection button to collapse and unfold groups. shuttle control is handy as are the metronome etc buttons.

old pic, but yeah it fits great. I could still use 3 rows of matrix though.

Don't believe the negative hype. I got one about a month ago after asking some people here and I couldn't be happier.
The best part is that through custom scripts and mappings I am finding unique ways to use it that suit me perfectly.

I have played with the launchpad and while nice, it simply does not compare.

The main thing with an APC40 is that you need to work with it to make it your own. After that you will barely touch the computer.

i saw one for 200 at guitar center over laborday.. the 40 not the 20. does this mean akai has something newer in the works? an apc40 number2 or something?

I was wondering the same thing but the consensus seems to be that there is nothing in the immediate future.

If anyone is on the fence with the APC just go for it! You won't be disappointed.
