drc24, a lot of what you say is correct, but there is one small thing coming up in the next few years which is that vinyl is actually going to be banned...
Turns out that to produce vinyl for records is an environmentally hazardous process, and as a result all production is going to cease. I can't remember when but as far as I know this is for certain, so the way things are currently being done has to change... I can't produce any sources for this - someone else might be able to fir up some links here that illustrate what I'm talking about...

that shouldn't prevent some sort of substance being used for the same purpose though.

i very much doubt that vinyl will completely disappear for at least a few more decades. Japan has a huge market in new vinyl for example; and it costs a shitload to press it there. They just refuse to give it up.

Thanks for the links, guys. I've been using beatport myself for a few months and I've found it very useful for keeping up to date with new techno/tech-house releases without having to get myself a record deck. The only thing I don't like about it is the shitty NI-driven interface.. and the selection of records could be a bit better too.

But I'm going to check out the links posted in this thread now too...

yeah, the japanese are buying a lot of vinyl, however, as far as I know noone has been able to come up with a substitute to vinyl for records. Whether this will change or not is anyones guess - I'm just going by what I read sometime back. If only I could find those links so could see what I'm talking about...

and for a legal approach to free music there are tons of netlabels out there with free downloads of mp3s. some are good and some are bad...

try some google searches for netlabels and see what you find.
