If you rack the EQ8, you can stack filters on the same macro. This gives you steeper curves.
Yes I use to do the same thing with the waves plugins but as we are talking about why people turn to other EQs well haveing an EQ where you don't have to rack a series of filters on top to make an effective high pass might well be one of the reasons.
I did some comparisons between third party EQs Image and also EQ 3 Image This should so how different these tools can be when doing the same jobs. Sonnox was the winner for me but more often then not I find my self turning to EQ3 if I don't need it bellow 50 Hz the sounds tops aren't vital as I turn all but the mid band off to get rid of the crossovers which are by design not transparent.

So would the EQ8 be sufficient enough for me to split my frequencies into low, mid and high?
Say I put more points to make a steeper curve?
And what are peoples opinions on linear phase eq's? Just reading up on them now having only heard the term the other day :p

Damn it Angstrom, you're right - for some reason I never picked that up before (always Eee-Queue-8 to me), but I can already feel that you've infiltrated my brain with this crazy new jive-talkin

It depends on how transparent you want the effect to be. if you had a rack with 3 channels each with an EQ isolating a band you would def here the difference when switching the rack on and of. there was a really good 'and very complex' rack doing the rounds where is had a perfect band split but it was quite unwildly if you didn't understand its architecture.

Only complaint I've heard about the EQ8 that I heard in a Kryptic Mindz tutorial was that it tends to be very mild when you try to notch or boost. There are a lot of good parametric EQ's out there as well as many that are free, just check them against your ear to see if you like what they're doing musically and perhaps grab a spectrum analyzer to see how the effectiveness of the controls stacks up.

i like the fabfilter eq because of the handling, gui and integrated analyzer.

to add hi silver shimmering on vocals or overheads i use the 1973 eq from stillwell.

Skillz. That looks much simpler than the one I downloaded before called "Multi band splitter V2.1" which devides in to HIGH, HIGH-MID, LO-MID, LO and SUB/LO-CUT. Was that one of your design to?

Yep, Stillwell Audio's 1973 EQ gives good shimmer. Adds a lot of character. Works great on synths sometimes too. I could totally see it for overheads, that's a good shout. Totally different than a workhorse, parametric eq.

I really like EQ8. Pro Q has the steeper slopes & the built in analyzer that I like a lot, I use that heck out of it. Again, EQ8 seems a fairly surgical eq, which is what you need from a bundled eq. It's excellent, like a lot of Live's effects. I find myself using them more all the time.

EQ8 is my go to equalizer. The only time I stray away from it is when I'm using a specific processor for an effect, such as Voxengo Voxformer, which I use on vocal tracks. It has an EQ, two compressors, a deesser, and a gate built into it, so in that specific case, I don't use EQ8. Otherwise, I'm using EQ8 on almost all my tracks.

On the master bus, I have in the past used Kjaerhus Golden EQ or some other mastering EQ which has no phasing or coloring. But again, EQ8 in high quality mode will suffice in that situation as well.

I've never really considered using anything other than EQuate. Works great for everything I need to do.

Nice to see you neb, been a while... How's mrs neb?
