Re: Dropbox: Syncing between two machines?
interesting thread, as I'm now working on a live set with a friend,
I think we'll use either dropbox or spideroak or gobbler,
but I now have a question : we already began to work on the set, and kept on modding it each on his side since now 3 weeks... what's the best way to merge our 2 separately modded live sets, before we begin to use one of these tools??
I hope there's an easy solution, but I can't figure it out now... I hope we won't have to re-do all that's been done in one set into the another, from scratch and with our hands(mouse)...
thanks in advance
cheers

Re: Dropbox: Syncing between two machines?
I tried Dropbox and it didn't work for me, but mainly because I was syncing files with my assistant, and we would get multiple versions of files. We switched to SugarSync, and it works a lot better. I'm running on a Mac, and she's on a PC, and we have no issues.
Also, I looked into Gobbler, and I like the fact that it's dedicated to music projects and has proprietary backup solutions for musicians. And the beta is free for 25gb of space - not bad!

I love that. Wish I had a "she assistant" tooI was syncing files with my assistant, and we would get multiple versions of files. We switched to SugarSync, and it works a lot better. I'm running on a Mac, and she's on a PC
apart from that dumb joke from me, could you explain what's better with sugarsync? do you mean Dropbox makes a new file and stores the old ones each time you upload / sync?
I'm thinking more and more of this use of a web hosting site with "sync" ability, but the more I think about it, the less I seem to understand it...
I'll just have a try and figure it ou myself, or stick with the "manual merging" of our sets each time me and my musicmate (he's a "he"...) will meet to work on our live set.
cheers
Re: Dropbox: Syncing between two machines?
We had issues where I'd create a file. It would sync to her system. Then she would work on the file offline. Then when she reconnected, Dropbox would create a new version of the file which wouldn't sync with me. This was not going to work, as we trade files back and forth a lot. SugarSync does this seemlessly.
If you're looking for a solution where you just back up your own files online and don't trade files with others, than Dropbox will be fine. Dropbox is also great for sharing your files to other. But the second you trade back and forth, I think Dropbox has a lot of bugs. Just my two cents.

Hi Ableton Peeps!
Just wanted to introduce myself to the community. I'm Andrew, the community manager at Gobbler (and an Ableton user). I appreciate the convo going on here regarding cloud backup & transfer and wanted to address some points for those of you that are interested in working with us through the beta period.
1. Gobbler reads project folders & assets within the project folder. Because of this, I recommend doing a collect & save before backing up.
2. Gobbler does non-destructive incremental backups/timestamps, so you can always move backwards/forwards should you like an earlier take.
Almost everyone on our team comes from the music/audio world and we are working really hard to make the "most awesomest" (new word) product for the pro audio community. Please hit us here, or the gobbler community http://community.gobbler.com with your feedback; good, bad or otherwise.
Thanks peeps,
Andrew

Hey Andrew, what do you anticipate charging once the beta period ends?

Once we go live (which most likely won't be until 2012) we will have 25GB accounts for around $8 per month.

Re: Dropbox: Syncing between two machines?
Currently using Dropbox for a similar purpose - a collaborator and I share a dropbox folder so our work is centralized.
We basically never save to the same project (i.e. we could clobber the other's edits), but for the purpose it's been serving it's done a great job. painlessly simple.
If you're a unix guy, you can setup subversion with automatic-versioning and access it via WebDAV - thats kinda a neat free solution.

Re: Dropbox: Syncing between two machines?
Hey Ableton peeps,
I am having some very annoying problems with ableton and dropbox. My bud and I collaborate our Live 9 projects through dropbox and everytime the project is returned to me, there are a ton of 'media files missing'. Although they are not in fact missing, I have to go through and re-select all the media files manually. This has become very annoying as it consumes 10 minutes of my project time. If someone could please assist.

Re: Dropbox: Syncing between two machines?
Are the files stored within the project folder (collect all and save) or just on your respective machines?
