worst case scenario you like it and want more, and get an APC40 and have a control over an extra 8 scenes without navigating through your set. So long as you've got the launchpad, you may want to look at this:
http://www.nativekontrol.com/LPC-Live.html
then, if you get the apc40 you can use these extra modes with your launchpad to do other duties besides clip launch!
I'd stay away from guitar center though, as you're likely to find much better deals online.

I was going to suggest you consider both if you can afford it. The APC and LP side by side are a great combination. I've been using both for quite awhile now… very flexible, plenty of control, and everything works together really well.
I use a couple of Novation's SL MkII keyboards as well (running automap) and all together it's a pretty amazing setup…

I have both and the seamless integration is phenomenal. I use the grid on the APC for most of my clip/scene launching and that frees up the Launchpad so I can stay in user mode 1 or 2 for effects (beat repeat, delay, etc), a step sequencer, or even an instrument rack (like drums sans velocity). They are great compliments to each other. Wherever one falls short, the other picks up. I really couldn't imagine having one without the other after using both together. The only other thing I'd like to add to this setup is a Behringer BCR2000 just to have an extra 32 rotary encoders. Those are pretty cheap too and oddly enough among all their uber expensive gear, Daft Punk has two of those right in the middle of their live setup. But the best advice I could give is to thoroughly read up on any product you are thinking of purchasing and really try to understand what it does and how it fits your workflow. I've seen so many different ways to use an APC and/or Launchpad that if you can imagine it then it can probably do it. It's really up to you. Good luck.

The LP has a usb 1.1 port, and struggles when you do lots of midi routing.
apc is solid but only works with live, if you get it go with Hanz script which is gree
livid stuff is rock solid and it works with different software. The way to go. The apc is getting old and I would expect a new product sooner or later. I;ve got the lp and apc 40 and wish that I had gone with ohm 64.

Even though the APC has knobs and faders, I think you get more "bang for your buck" with the launchpad...especially with nativekontrol's LPC.
I noticed that nativekontrol's launchpad mapping has a bunch more features than than the APC-40 version including a MPC-style drum mode, 2 different step sequencers, and mlr-style clip chopping.
Lately I've become a total LPC convert. For production and writing it's the best front-end for Ableton I've found. It really clicked once I made an overlay to tame the complexity.
