this is NEVER the case. new software, more features, more CPU hungry software.
big f-ing deal.

What new features? Vocoder and Cabinet? .. Optional M4L?
Let me make this analogy instead - the bigger garage you have the more likely you are to fill it with useless junk.

if those are the only new Live 8 features you can name you don't know the software very well.

yep. as a hardware engineer I see this all the time, we build better and better hardware, the software guys use more and more of it.

Well, I haven't seen much that improves my core workflow all that much since 7. I've been using Live personally and professionally in production and performance capacities since Live 4. I don't really understand your combative attitude - this post was intended to shed some light on a potential CPU issue when using Kontakt / Live in hopes that 1) Ableton becomes aware of this potential issue and deals with it if needed and 2) other users can confirm / disprove this claim.

feel free to ignore me.
it's crap like this:
theextravaganttraveller wrote:Bump!
The Ableton QA team really needs to investigate.. This makes it impossible for anyone working with deep-sampled Kontakt instruments to do any sort of serious work with recent versions of Live!
this is just buggin'. it's naive to think Ableton have never tried Kontakt with Live. but let's not get personal, right?
I have no doubt that your claims are true and correct. Kontakt is well known to be a CPU hog and third party plug ins in general are known to be a cause of Live's problems. I also have no doubt that there are plenty of copies of Kontakt on the computers at Ableton, it's a VERY popular plug in. in Live's development I'm sure they test third party plug-ins, including Kontakt. the people at Ableton use Live too, for fun, not just for work.
feel free to rant and scream, if it makes Live better I benefit as well.

Well then I guess we're on the same page! No ranting or screaming, just using the forum for what it's for.

in hindsight I'm just killing time at work waiting for code to compile.
this has got me thinking that just trying Live sets in different versions could be enlightening to the developers. we could infer that the tightening up of the codebase involves more CPU usage, are they aware of how much more CPU usage is being used?

Hah! That's actually why i too was keeping an eye on the thread earlier - waiting for game code to compile!
Completely agree with you and hope that Ableton team are running such performance tests. And for other Kontakt users out there, please chime in if you run a similar test and can back up or refute my claim. I'll gladly be first in line to call myself an idiot!

...and I'm still here compiling code.
all this got me thinking that perhaps running the Live 8 Performance Test on the various flavors of Live 8 could shed some light on this. I know your concern is Kontakt but as for Live itself that might shed some light on things. all I can do is dream of having such free time.
damn I was ornery today, sorry. work's a brown note these days.

Ouch, sorry to hear that! And no offense taken my friend! Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely hunt down the performance test from the forum and see how I get on. I'd run it sometime ago right when I first got my machine, but not in the context of a shootout among various Live versions... Not that I have that much time either, but I'd rather be troubleshooting than actually writing music..
