you'd be better off using the Scale device.

pick a scale from the presets (if you are unsure of musical scales yourself) then you can just throw your fists at a keyboard and it will be vaguely jazz.
However, I'd advise a scout around the net to understand how scales are formed and try that info out using the scale plugin. Even a little knowledge will help you a lot, and the basic musical theory knowledge will build toward something.

the chord tool will make a chord from a single note, use the presets to get an idea, but like angstrom said, seek out a bit of basic music theory to help with...everything

but, it will not help with chord progressions, which you should also come across in your search of basic theory

you can google or wiki common chord progressions as a jumping off point

as for tuning drums, perc etc, any of the tuner vst above will do, but theory will still help with that bc straitup tuning to the root note can sometimes make for a less interesting result that harmonizing all the parts (within the chosen key)

So say I want to do some sample collage stuff. Maybe a horn line from one record, some vocals from another, and maybe some filtered bass from another. If I put this in every chain, it will tell me the key that sample is in, and then I can adjust the sample accordingly to make them fit together properly?

it will tell you the note that the given sample is...the first note of a musical phase will very often tell you the key, but its not 100% (theres are invversion, blah blah), not exact science

use it + your ear and you'll get close...

Yeah, I think reading up on the theory is a good plan if you have a desire to do music for the rest of your life. Otherwise it's like trying to be a boxer by simply copying moves from boxing movies.

Of course there are plenty of geniuses who never learned what a subdominant is, but unless you are lucky enough to be howlin wolf it's worth learning the rudiments of the craft. I only know the rudiments btw. But I couldnt be without them.

I am having trouble installing the Tuneit VST. I am running Ableton Suite 8.2.7 on a MBP with OSX 10.6.8. I downloaded the VST Plugin for OSX bundle. And I dragged the tunit.vst in my library. User/Library/Audio/Plugins/VST folder. But when I open Ableton I can't find the VST anywhere. I think it should be in my plug in devices/user folder but its not showing up? Can anyone please help?

tuneit is my favorite vst tuner ... if your recording by yourself just put it on the master track
