Awesome drummer using Live...
Re: Awesome drummer using Live...
i was trying to do this, but found many, many complications when trying to do it in front of people, especially with the mics/sound system. i was doing it in small environments in front of small groups. the one time it worked ok was in a large environment with a really loud system. it was really hard to achieve a musical balance between the computer and drums. I wasn't trying to do a music minus one thing that many or the one drummer band guys do, but more like max is doing, where your altering the sound of your live drums with effects, clip envelopes while launching clips live. kudos to max for getting it done so nicely. it makes me feel better that your five years into it. i spent almost a whole year on it but have been spending the last month just on composing electronic music.
wondering if max had any suggestions for doing this live and how to resolve any sound/mixing issues that may arise, especially for a small club type setting.

Absolutely, though I'm going about it differently, using envelope followers ("r-chain III, "rdm's M4L device). The possibilities are pretty ridiculous.shadx312 wrote:Thanks for clarifying!
I was wondering if you had set up 2 or 3 gates to trigger different (or maybe just additional) effects from the same channel, just have 3 different thresholds so depending on how hard you hit the crash it would only trigger 1 effect or 3. Have you tried that?
I feel your pain, man!bartend7 wrote: ...

The answers lie in the setup (drums should be positioned "behind" the PA, though it won't help much with the low end build-up); close-micing; gating; EQ-ing/filtering; experimentation. And I'm still learning myself. It's a real challenge, and you're right, smaller rooms tend to be more problematic.

Yeah I always have my eye out for drummers doing thins kind of thing, hopfully to do band stuff with. Drummers who are also interested in electronics/hybrid setups, is pretty rare to see, and that still surprises me. Seems 'drumming' is in perfect harmony with this idea, I'm not sure why we dont see more of it.Max Oepen wrote:...Back then, absolutely nobody was doing it on drums.
Anyways, looking forward to more vids and music. You should check out Rabalders stuff. That guy goes to outerspace, I dig it.

Im so glad to see more and more of us drummers doing this stuff

I have just finished a couple of videos that explain what it is I'm doing with Spacebar, how I set things up, and the benefits and challenges. Hope someone gets something out of this...

Re: Awesome drummer using Live...
Great minds think alike. I love to see more musicians using live. The problem I have is that I have such little room with timables and congas around my kit (even when I drop down to a 4 piece) that I need to find someway to suspend these midi controllers off boom stands or something clever). I hate having to sacrifice timbales because I place afro cuban jazz DnB mixed together with downtempo stuff.
We are riding the wave of the future! How's the scene in dallas, I lived in austin and found a bunch of like minded folks.
Down with e kit's, fake e cymbals, it's like playing a nord "organ" when you can place a hammond

In a K induced Haze (the old K kind not the special K kind ), but an Asian spizz can sometimes bring me out! If ya don't get it, ya never will.

^I went from an 8 piece kit to a 2 piece kit to make room for my electronics.

at hendrick
look into expanding with footpedals. the kmi softstep is a great add on for the kit, and it will really open up your left foot. never get rid of the timbales.
