well ive been using the audio express by motu for a week or so now and i'm gonna have to be honest..im a little let down. I expected the sound to be better than my m-audio firewire 410, and for the most part they were the same (m audio might have been a little clearer) but when I plugged in my guitar to the motu and ran through guitar rig it sounded terrrrrrible. I also didnt really like how the whole thing was set up. It was a little too complex for me, I just want something where I can plug in my mic or guitar, adjust a gain knob, and be done with it. This had 4 separate mixes and I feel like i paid for that stuff rather than the sound itself. Anybody else experience this? If anyone knows a good sounding unit that is basically just the standard In/Out no fancy things please let mek now. I want my money to go towards sound quality more than extra features.

Firewire is fine actually, I dont think theres a USB that's bus powered so I actually prefer firewire now. Only thing, does that headphone output send in stereo? I'm assuming yes but my current one does not . Looks nice, but I wonder if having it rack mountable would be a plus..

RME USB cards have a performance on par with firewire. But they are expensive.

Your audio interface is your most important piece of gear when using soft synths and live input imho.
I was using my Focusrite pro40 for about a year in live situations and was honestly impressed. Well, until I tried my Apogee Ensemble. Much better low end and bubbly top end. Great for electronic dance music. There really was no comparison in hindsight. I just wish they made an LE half rack version for portability like the RMEs

yes. i have a 4 way splitter (headphone amp) plugged into it so four of us can get lost in pong delay on a fart noise just as easy as one.

rack mounts are cool if you have room. this thing's foot print is small. i LOVE the big ass volume nob. it's just a comfy unit and the quality is there and then some for the price, no doubt. there is also a decent reverb that comes with it so if you are only using Live's native reverb that could be a bonus too.

As for Firewire vs USB 2.0, I do tend to believe that the USB 2.0 will be able to deliver what I need. Dealing with the firewire connectivity was really annoying..

I bought brandnew Scarlett 2i2 and connected it to USB 2.0/1.1 port (Gigabyte GA-A75M-S2V) and it works horribly (background noises) with Ableton Live 7. But after installing the newest drivers (2.3) and connecting to USB 3.0 port it didn't work at all.

After connection to USB 2.0/1.1 once again it works but quality (besides really great one via phones) was mediocre (background noises and no cranking up volume). I test all my cables and still noises and crackles heard on my Yamaha HS 50M monitors.

The realtek HD audio quality on gigabyte motherboard was... far better.

I used some interfaces like Behringer FCA, Audiotrak Optoplay and soudcards: Echo Mia MIDI, Turtle Beach Tropez+ and Julia...and now Focusrite... and to my mind Behringer and Echo outscored the rest! Only Behringer FCA is firewire in this team but it sounds great.

I use desktop with AMD X4 631 Quad, Gigabyte GA-A75M-S2V, Windows XP, service pack 3.
