Re: PC or Mac?
Win7 works 5 times faster than OSX in music territory.
http://www.dawbench.com/win7-v-osx-6.htm
Don't waste your money on garbage if you are going to throw your cash on new faster main machine. OSX is nearly like a low spec engine old car. Yea they are just Made in China shit as well as the other electronics. Not hand-crafted Italian car. (Of course It is the matter of your taste to buy old car, but it's no longer for Pro, as you can see Apple have discontinued pro products such as X-serve, anti-glare Cinema Display, and now going to do on Mac Pro.) They are now pursuing to be i-toy maker because that collects more cash from people's wallet. Yea these are also Made in China.

Re: PC or Mac?
Have to agree Windows 7 tamed the beast, very few problems now. It just works... hey that has a ring to it, iLike.
Have never used a Mac so I have no opinion on them. But I also have had no big problems with Live even when 8 came out. I dont use many external plugs though either. And I know as soon as I say this I will jinx it.
I also dont think it matters as much as earlier where Macs did have an advantage.
Would like an iPad though.

Re: PC or Mac?
i used to work in a computer music lab at a well known art school here in the states, we had about 40 brand new quad core Imacs in the room running Live, Protools, reason, etc... Those fucking things crashed every day. I was constantly restarting computers for students and troubleshooting bullshit issues.
my studio PC I built over a year ago for $900 still dominates these new Imacs and I can't say I remember a crash or even a dropout once.
It comes down to the hardware. $50 in a pc gets you a top spec SIIG firewire card that will run your RME or MOTU flawlessly. Instead of spending money on a brand name I'd rather have 12 gigs of ram and a motherboard constructed out of military grade bomb clay!!!

Hand over your "studio PC" to a few of those students and see what happens. Guarantied you'll have to do a lot more then restart the computer.nopattern wrote:i used to work in a computer music lab at a well known art school here in the states, we had about 40 brand new quad core Imacs in the room running Live, Protools, reason, etc... Trust yourself and buy a PC if you see no sense to buy a Mac. And yes I'm on Mac too and I have some of these machines, but on my working place I use windows ... and really I learned to love it again. And everybody who says you need a Mac for music is wrong imho you can do all stuff with any of the both OS, some things are a little more difficult and some things are easier to realize - on both sides.drumboy02 wrote:I was having a casual discussion with someone at school about computers and unrelated to music but I had mentioned to this person that I use my PC for music production. Their response was that I should switch to Mac, but could not really offer a reason why. I don't plan on buying a Mac, and I really prefer to use PC because that is what I am used to but I am wondering what the advantages to using a Mac over PC for music production and particularly with Ableton Live. I don't really know too much about Macs besides the fact that they are expensive, but people tend to think they are superior to PC. Is it really just a matter of personal preference? In my personal opinion, I think that people favor Macs because they are just aesthetically pleasing to look at. Am I just totally wrong?
And one big Argument against Mac is, they are always spearhead of technology
And the second thing is the OS, yes the OS: with Lion they've done really a shoot in the foot. They killed the ease of use of the calendar and the Adressbook and I'm not really seeing innovations on this OS. But with mountain Lion it seems they bring back some good things.
3rd thing: don't get addicted to Mac like me and a lot of others - it's really an expensive drug.
Re: PC or Mac?
OSX is great. So is Windows 7. I have an 2011 MBP running Lion and a 5 year old Dell Vostro running W7 - I use both for making music and neither disappoints me. I get better CPU usage on the MBP and if I had to choose one, it would definitely be the Mac, but my Dell is more than adequate. If you're happy with your PC and don't even know why you'd need a Mac, stick with the PC. If you want slightly better performance (maybe) and great ergonomics/aesthetics and you're prepared to pay top dollar for that, get a MacBook Pro. You can't lose either way!

Core Audio is technologically same as ASIO and WASAPI. It's a matter of your taste and the software which supports.hps909 wrote:if windows offerred something like core audio and core midi .. i'd be impressed... until that day i'll still use OSX
Re: PC or Mac?
in theory, but far less reliable in my experience. I've had more than one experience where I spent hours trying to get things working.pencilrocket wrote:Core Audio is technologically same as ASIO and WASAPI. Re: PC or Mac?
then why cant i plug a firewire (or usb for that matter) interface into a windows machine and just have it work without a driver? where's the graphical midi routing implementation in windows? where's the ability to use more than one interface at a time in windows? where's the built in midi over lan? if windows gave me that i'd consider using it. not to mention i can have my entire system on an ext HDD and take it to any mac, anywhere and boot my system up on it using just about any hardware interface with out drivers !!!... if windows gave me that i'd consider using it

Tell that to the 650,000 Mac users who've just had their machines infected...
