yep, deesser 1st in the chain.
if you redo the vocals, try positioning the mic's capsule at nose or forehead level and see if you can get rid of sibilance and ssshhhibilance as well as proximity effect. in an opposite way, if your female s's tend to go upward, place the capsule at chin level or just underneath. Experimentations...
