for guitar tone you might want to look for outboard solutions as well. Guitar Rig and/or guitar-efx-racks in Live eat a lot of CPU. When I was gigging with a 2ghz macbook I used a pod for the guitar. Now I have a new macbook pro, so CPU wise I am fine, but I am still struggling to find good presets in Live for a nice guitar tone.

Yeah, I was trying to use guitar rig in ableton and have the soft step control the guitar rig guitar tones. Sort of tricky.
