Windows 8 experiences...?
Re: Windows 8 experiences...?
i talked to many guys and it´s everytime the same:
- people who worked with win 8 are saying: very good os
- people who don´t have a clue are saying: another vista (they never worked REAL with windows)
but thats another topic

Re: Windows 8 experiences...?
I haven't tested Live much in all honesty but I did notice Maschine running more poorly under Windows 8. Significantly so when used as a plug in (audio drop outs, over loading CPU, eventual hard shut downs). I had no problems at all with it under Windows 7.
Haven't really tried Live + Maschine extensively in Windows 8 and not sure what everyone else is finding with the pair but it wasn't playing nicely over the weekend.

Thanks for your quote & insight!3dot... wrote:read the above performance improvements...
if you could make your hardware perform better... by simply upgrading the OS and how it performs/manages resources...
then it's a no-brainer really...
I really don't understand where all this fear and negativity is coming from..
Windows8 Developer Preview was running smooth 8 months ago...

I worked every day with windows for probably the last 15 years.Evengy wrote:i talked to many guys and it´s everytime the same:

Don't make assumptions - you will make a fool of yourself.

Re: Windows 8 experiences...?
The SONAR blog posts were misleading.3dot... wrote:have you read the above ?
there are considerable performance improvements... directly related to audio...
The SONAR test wasn't a real benchmark. They just read a bunch of meters without pushing their test systems to see what the OS could deliver. TAFKAT/Vin from DAWBench did Win7-to-Win8 tests on the same system with both SONAR and Cubase, and got identical results, using the RTM version of Win 8 64-bit. The DAWBench tests involve loading projects with literally hundreds of disabled plugins or hundreds of muted notes of sample polyphony, and you progressively enable plugins or unmute tracks, depending on the test, until audio breaks down. You count the number of plugins/notes once you reach that threshold, and the higher the result, the better the performance.
I did my own DAWBench tests between fresh installs of Win 7 and Win 8 on the same system on four different audio interfaces, and my results ranged from a 0%-44% performance reduction on Windows 8, depending on the interface. I believe that the reason for the underperforming on the MOTU interfaces was the drivers, and will re-test again once MOTU officially adds Win 8 support.
There ARE some performance enhancements in Windows 8, but it's mostly around launching apps, starting Windows, and for applications explicitly optimized for Win 8. I have seen zero evidence of any performance improvement in terms of music production, and in fact there are several reasons NOT to jump to Win 8 yet, depending on your plugins and hardware.
- I never got my Waves stuff to work on Win 8, and neither did TAFKAT.
- Several folks, including TAFKAT, have reported issues with iLok.
- Sylenth1 has problems on Win 8.
- I've seen various reports of people experiencing lots more pops and crackles on their interfaces under Win 8.
- Some Virus TI owners are complaining of Win 8 problems. The audio interface feature of my Virus seems to work fine (in fact it was the only one of my interfaces that didn't perform worse on Win 8 ), but I haven't done anything else with the Virus on Win 8.
All of the above are things that will probably fixed through software updates. Win 8 works fine for some people, but for music production, for the time being at least (performance may begin to improve as vendors optimize for the new OS), at best your music production performance will be the same on Win 8 as it is on Win 7. (Although it will probably be an improvement over Vista if you're still on that!)
I don't care what OS you use, but I encourage anyone interested in trying Win 8 out to either install Win 8 on a separate drive/partition, or make a full, validated backup of your working Win 7 image before doing the upgrade. Everyone's system is different, and we just don't know all the current problems/benefits yet.
Re: Windows 8 experiences...?
Had a good couple hour session last night testing overall performance and can definitely say that Windows 8, on my system at least, performs significantly poorer against Windows 7 for Live and Maschine. Studio One overloads very quickly too (but I didnt have this prior to Windows 8 for comparrisons sake).
I don't doubt that these issues will be sorted out fairly quickly though and that performance will catch up in no time (fingers crossed!.

Re: Windows 8 experiences...?
I tested it for my work applications - it was a dog.
I didn't bother with music - if it doesn't work well with outlook there's no point in trying with Live....

Re: Windows 8 experiences...?
My son got it on his macbook and he is having overheating problems trying to play games - doesn't seem that the boot camp drivers are updated yet and I'm hoping that will fix power saving issues when they release it
Re: Windows 8 experiences...?
Outlook express has been discontinued afaik... and is now a web service...
so this would explain why it hadn't been developed since 2010
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-HK/wind ... ok-Express
https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa=wsi ... cbcxt=mail
also I don't think the next version of office will have Outlook..

He did say Outlook (no mention of Express)3dot... wrote:Outlook express has been discontinued afaik

And from what I was reading a few days ago about the new Office, Outlook will still be a part of it. look here

You're joking right - I am looking at Outlook 2010 right now and I am certain that Outlook will not be discontinued any time soon.3dot... wrote:Outlook express has been discontinued afaik... and is now a web service...

What do you think is Microsoft's strategic email client if not Outlook?
Strange
Re: Windows 8 experiences...?

Re: Windows 8 experiences...?
yeah it worried me for a bit - since our email strategy is based on outlook and exchange!
Re: Windows 8 experiences...?
it´s although my experience. many people don´t like changes and they need a lot longer to get used to new workflows etc. they don´t spend that much time and the first opinion is "crap" (applied on many things not only on a new os, i think you know some of that guys)ian_halsall wrote:I worked every day with windows for probably the last 15 years.Evengy wrote:i talked to many guys and it´s everytime the same:

win 8 is imho better that win 7 and people should take a second view.
@topic
the benchmark tells me that the komplete audio is slower on win 8. hmmm, maybe a new driver speeds it up.
outlook is included in 2013 like expected
