I'm disgusted that Ableton haven't posted an apology by now (please point me towards it if they have). I realised immediately on receiving the two emails that their mailing list had been hacked, but it is unacceptable for them not to apologize for so many people receiving this shit.

they did apologise ... though I don't think they really needed to. It was only a spammer. It is a problem for anyone connected to the net.

Dear Ableton forum users,
On April 17, 2005, some of you received an email from
[email protected] with the subject line, "Lies which last 90 years long."
This message was a bulk/spam email created by a hacker who used a security hole in the software that runs the Ableton forum. Yesterday, we shut down the forum to investigate the situation and to upgrade our forum software to assure this will not happen again.
Today, we are writing you to apologize for this incident and to clarify that the contents of this email in no way reflect our opinion. We also want to assure you that all of your user data is safe, and that absolutely none of your personal information has been exposed, not even your email address.
Please know that we take the security of your personal data very seriously.
Please also accept our sincere apology for this distraction in your music production and performance schedule.
Thank you for your continued interest in Ableton.
Sincerely,
The Abletons

Sorry. I'd assumed from the thread title "Ableton Forum Abuse", that it was about the activity discussed in this thread
http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18934.

It was in their name, and to their mailing list.

very easy to do unfortunately. no company is safe from such attacks.
whatever about 'phishing' where hackers send emails appearing to be from customerservices@[yourbank].com etc and trick customers into inputting their pin number on a bogus copy of the official website (that looks exactly like the legitimate website, including the URL).
very nasty indeed.
