From what I've seen, we can extract Melody, Chords and Drums to midi (not at one time). But I'd like to see a Bass to Midi function - does anyone know if this will be possible? Maybe EQ to isolate the bass, transpose up, then convert melody to midi?

As long as the base is prominent enough you wont need to fanny around with transposing up and the likes - Ableton will detect it as a melody (at least it has in my case). And with a mic it will put whatever you sing or hum into the correct range so if you go all Joy Division for a moment you'll be able to get the notes sorted easily enough! EQ-ing to isolate in a general mix would help but I wouldnt hold your breath for excellent results in music with multiple parts.

it seems to me that, if all you want is the bass line, humming it and using Melody to MIDI could be more effective than attempting to isolate it (if/when there are other background sounds).

One recommendation I can make if you want to study some melodies especially if you are not too savvy with creating them is to look around for a MIDI version of the song and drag that into Ableton. You will be able to see all parts of the song and get an idea on how it works. You can then load in some instruments and adjust the tempo to something you can follow along with and start playing another instrument over the song. Nice way to just get going.

use the convert harmony function

then start disabling notes from highest to lowest one phrase at a time until you isolate the entire bass part

don't delete any notes, just in case you're wrong

^ I like that. I also like it when the bass is not on the tonic - it changes the whole tonal thing. And by eliminating the right notes in the "harmony", this is more easily accomplished.
