A bit of calculus :
USB2 bandwith (theoretical) is 480 Mbit/s
1 channel @ 96khz / 24bit means 96000 * 24 = 2.19 Mbits per second.

480 / 3 (yep, I round it to the superior value) means... 160 damn theoretical channels at 96khz with usb2.

Even if we take the half, which is a pretty real value, we have 80 channels.
So do you really think somebody out there has the need for more in an external interface? :)

When you put it like that I guess USB2 will do.

Brilliant assertion.

I may consider a 2.0 Audio interface that sports 8 analog inputs + ADAT i/o and purchase an analog to ADAT converter to convert line signals to ADAT signal stream to get my 16 inputs.

PreSonus AudioBox 1818VSL + Behringer ADA8000 - 16 Analog inputs and 24 Analog outputs (16/16 96/24 recording) = $800 :) Those should snug nicely into my rack. But I am interested to try out the Recording Software that RME is advertising on it's website http://www.rme-audio.de/en_products_fireface_ufx.php#3, so I might opt for that, who knows - I need to determine if it is more stable than Pro tools for recording 16 tracks at 96/24 in a laptop platform.
