I'll explain it for the 324th time, so i'll make it short :
i got one 'through' track for my violin, monitor to 'in'. Then X armed tracks, monitor to 'off', receiving audio from the 'through' track. This way my violin always goes through, and i can record violin clips whenever and wherever i want.

OK get it now - thanks.
So they created a button that triggers recording on all armed audio and midi tracks, and at the same time acts as a midi overdub toggle button ??? !!!
One of the reasons I've resisted the Live 9 upgrade is because I couldn't get my head around the new recording controls.

yeah but the session record button is also used to overdub existing MIDI clips, but it seems that you can't use it without also triggering recording of new clips in armed tracks. Basically it needs a separate overdub mode controlled by it's own button.

Yeah. Insane, isn't it ??? Same thing if you wanna record clip automation on the fly.
L9 is just not usable.

Just sent this to ableton :
Hi,
i think i really need to insist on the fact that the new overdub logic is a show killer for several users.
If you have several armed tracks, the session record button triggers recording clips in every armed track.
This means :
- Impossible to overdub midi notes in clips on the fly
- Impossible to record session automation on the fly.
This could however be done by Shift+Click on the button, which is obviously something i won't do on stage.
The only way to currently do it is to use m4l and this patch which requires aka.keyboard external.
May i tell you that :
- it's a shame to have to use M4L for such a task
- it requires an external max object
- not every Live user owns M4L !
Thanks for paying attention.

the whole thing is a bad idea. the fact you could just hit one button and now you have to hit two just to overdub is just wrong. they made a simple step twice as complicated.
