I used to see her playing on the streets of San Francisco. You'd be walking down the street & begin to hear this ethereal music drifting out of the air... Wonderful.

It's not the youtube Love that album but it's sounds like shit both intentionally and probably unintentionally.

Funny, used to see her around SF CA all the time, I was creeped out by her. She came across to teenage me as creepy and suicidal, like she was going to go home that day and off herself. Maudlin doesn't even cover it. Glad to see I was wrong though, she's still playing around SF apparently.

Dead on, both bands. The Residents especially used lofi recordings for atmosphere. <-- also why their earlier stuff is more effective.

Good point - although the music that was created with such basic equipment was amazing.

I love that pic - its like: 'Eek! I give up! I really don't know what I'm doing!'

Creativity aside, to my ears I think both their music from that era has a similar sonic imprint, and engineering values.

They both use their samples in a pretty dry state (so the sonic imprint is very similar) but there tends to be a lot more going on in Shadow's work arrangement-wise (and arguably creatively) hence my comment about higher production value. Entroducing was a huge undertaking and I have read interviews with Shadow about how much tweaking he actually did do to get everything sounding good and glued together. Mad Blunted Jazz by Cam is just great, great stuff but if you listen closely you can hear where samples aren't cut quite right, timing is slightly off, and everything sounds a bit hacked together sometimes (like it was cut together live by a Dj using only turntables.) It's actually part of what lends quite a bit of character to the album which is why I mentioned it. Cam's work after Mad Blunted Jazz does a much better job at betraying his skill-level as it is less engaging and more readily invites criticism.

old hardcore stuff definitely, particularly early misfits. awful production but amazing songs.

also sebadoh - weed forestin. the unproduction is really part of its charm.

Almost forgot to mention Sleep. If you're into stoner metal. Those guys have a very intentional grungy aesthetic. One of the few metal bands I've heard that have been doing an effective and creative "retro" thing. They sound like early Black Sabbath production wise. They purportedly spent their entire advance from one of their album contracts to buy a room sized bong.

sightings - i had their first album a while back, it seemed to have been recorded and mixed with everything running way into the red. so much so that so that it was prety much all noise and distortion, i think that was what they were going for though. i liked it
