In the production environment, it doesn't take much time once you know how to do it right. Besides, why not take the extra time to do it right, anyway?
HOWEVER... for applications in a live environment, the fades are useful... sorry, I was thinking only from the production standpoint with my last post. One can expect live performances to always sound a little messier than studio work, so use of the fades then is forgiveable.
