adam,

as i said, i haven't had any time for music-making, so my impressions are based on experience and intuition. unfortunately, this time has also coincided with the arrival of my Centrino (and happily with the arrival of a baby girl :D). i'll be able to tell for sure when i open up some of my older tracks, as i did routinely push Live past 80% when mixing down and occasionally resorted to bouncing tracks here and there to prevent glitching before rendering. obviously, i work a little differently than you do. as for using the power wisely, you are no one to determine that. if such a statement can be made, then we might as well have some specific rules on How to Make Music, How to Sequence and most importantly, How To Be Satisfied With A Sound That Isn't Exactly What You Want But Dammit Its More CPU Efficient.

Why cant we just all get a g5..ehm..along.

I already need to push the system to reach limits now that i upgraded my ram and got Tiger. Once we get dual cpu support....

Oh man..... :wink:

Nobody will bite for a mac/pc battle since tiger came out. How come? :lol:
The covers of pc magazines are funny as hell these days.

simple example of how to make Live crap out on my dual g5 2.5 ghz.. put an instance of Hydratone in every track. ;) it's a pity since I was looking forward to use it as a "glue" plugin that ties sound together nicely, but right now I can only use maybe 4 or 5 (in addition to all the other stuff of course) before things get ugly. It's a lot different in Logic, but that's an unfair comparison as long as Live ignores my second CPU.

of course the logical answer is "well, if you're using convolution eqs everywhere you shouldn't be surprised", but this is supposed to be one of the fastest computers around, so it would be kind of nice to be able to use track plugins excessively ;)

Longhorn will beat the pants of Tiger ... if it ever comes out :P

wasn't there rumors some time ago that the Mac OS would eventually be written for use on Intel cpus? i have both at work, and i do admit that X works more elegantly than XP.

I really hope they've been listening.

I've been practising my jedi mind powers, sending subliminal mind messages from my cave in London to Ableton HQ with the letters 'PDC' and the words 'Groove Quantize' ...

But microsofts super secret OS they're developing code named "Donkey" is even better. Expect a second generation called "Mule" and a 3rd named "Jackass"

I been pretty damn happy with using MS products since DOS days.

With MS stuff, I tend to be able to zip around the OS using the keyboard a lot faster than on mac. Microsoft's use of keyboard commands around the OS is superb and since I come from the old text prompt days, this is a godsend for me.

OS X does feel more elegant at present, but I am pretty sure that Longhorn will provide an awesome OS environment whenever it comes out. I just hope they reconsider their database filesystem exclusion.

i disagreed then and still beg to differ. just tested a track in 4, 5b1 & 5b2 - here's the peak usage:

4 -> 67%
5b1 -> 65%
5b2 -> 60%

they've improved nicely but that would not have occurred if they weren't behind the curve to begin with. here's hoping the gains will continue to be realized through the final release.

important though: how are you measuring cpu usage? Best way is to use the Performance counters or the Performance-tab of Windows Task Manager.
