please clarify what's the difference between modulation and automation.
Modulation belongs to clip and only to clip, you,ll see you are working on a modulation parameter because you,ll see a shadow under the line you are working. You can work with modulations only in view clip and not in the arrangement.
Automation belongs to clip and when you put on arrangement belongs to arrangement. You can work with automation on arrangement view and clip view. And there,s no shadow under the line.

Let's make it simpler :
16 bar clip. Unlinked automation lasting 15 bars.
Copy/paste the clip in the arrangement. Duplicate it several times : your automation will be 15-1-15-1-15-1....instead of 15-15-15-15.....

The way that automation works when you copy/paste and not live recording it,s that automation doesn,t loop on the arrangement. It would be nice but doesn,t work in this way with automation.
I wrote 'copy/paste' because this is what you have to do, now that stretching a clip lets automation in place. before, you would just stretch the clip in arrangement and all the clip automations would loop at their respective length. THAT WAS SO SMART !!

yeah, well, in live 8 you could apply modulation to a device parameter.
Anyway, my workflow is just fucked. And no way to go back to L8 with a song i made in L9.

Goddamn it, L9 brought only bad things to me !!!!
(well except the M4L API improvements : make them work in L8 please !)

The only thing i can tell you if you think this way:work as live 8 only with modulations.Live 9 can be like Live 8 if you only work with modulations and you will have the same workflow like on live 8.Click on a parameter, show modulation. And work like in live 8.

(let's admit that this is sort of 'hidden' in L9)

So, as a feature request i'd love to have a 'modulation as a default envelope' in the prefs !
