With Command pressed (don't know the equivalent for PC) you can press buttons and messages in Edit mode.

heres one I'm sure one of you can answer me and then I'll say "I wish I learned that a long time ago" how do you add breakpoints to connections while you're still drawing them?

Hold shift then click on the outlet/inlet. Then you can click on the background to place segments.

Turn it on from the Max application Menu Bar in the Options drop down menu and see if you prefer it on or off.

This is turning into just plain Max tips, but just in case...

You can make multiple connections with patch chords from one object to many others. After clicking on an inlet or outlet to create a patch chord hold down Shift, you can then click on many other objects inlets or outlets to create a patch chord to each of them from the original object.

Theres so much plain max tips that would be invaluable, I'm guessing many of us had our first experience of max in max4live, i wish i'd spent a little more time at the beginning learning max stuff!

Highlighting multiple patch cords and moving them all together has been a saviour for me so many times now!

To select multiple objects you can click and drag over an area in the max patcher window.

If you hold down alt while clicking and dragging you also select patch chords.

So you can select numerous patch chords by holding down alt, then click and drag over a number of patch chords (no objects). With all the patch chords selected you can now organise them, drag the green or red nodes to move what object they are connected to, press shift+command+y or alt+command+y to arrange the patch chords.

Holding down alt to select patch chords also works when individually selecting a number of objects by holding down the shift key and clicking on them.

So rather than dragging you can hold down alt+shift then click on a number of patch chords, or objects, to select them. You can then organise and arrange them using the commands mentioned above, and those found in the Arrange drop down menu in the Max application Menu Bar.

Serious though I've been wondering that for a while. I see people do it on youtubes but I couldn't find the answer in the docs or on google and I didn't want to ask on the cycling forum, but for some reason felt comfortable asking here.. go figure.

The bolded part is incorrect. You can create segmented patch cords in the manner I posted previously without having "Segmented Patch Cords" checked in the Options menu.

Having this checked only means that you don't have to hold shift to do it, but it can still be done without it checked.

what i said is perfectly correct!

it does depend if you have "segmented patch chords" on or not. you can create segmented patch chords without the option turned on, as you perfectly described above, i never said you couldn't.

just advising that you should try out both ways and see which one you like best

But the function can't really "depend" on the option if there's a way to do it without the option selected.

Nevermind! I think he's got it and you were right to point out that it's an option.

Right click on a patch chord and choose Color to set... the color of a patch chord. Took me only about 6 months to figure that one out

I was just messing around with the [live.observer value] method Myralfur described above. It works great, but can you disable such an observer? I thought it should be possible to just send an "id 0" message to the object, but the observer continues to spit out values for the last valid id.
