theres a reason for that...
its to with the sends.
If you assign all your send to b's...
with tracks set to A and sends to B - as you move the crossfader over - youll notice the send go up as the track comes down..!!

yeah, it is a poor analogy. spreadsheets have rightclick functionality and multiple worksheets are available as tabs.

My god, being a Sasha fan I must say I'm embarassed!
I'm more adventurous with Live in my wee bedroom than that!
Thankfully I am also a fan of techno & breaks, amongst other things, so am not that far up my own arse (or Sashas).

Richie Hawtins "secret" Live feature is in since Live 4 for everyone:
create a file "Options.txt" in Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live4
write the line:
-MIDINoteFeedback
in it. If a session clip has been MIDI learned it will put out a note event when triggered, and a note event with velocity 1 per loop count and the note off on stop.
Thats all.

These pics are certaining telling of one thing - hawtin's als appear to be dense in smaller length clips/loops which I'm sure he mixes on the fly to build a continual performance...and while I have no doubts regarding Hawtin's technical skills and ability to mix said elements together, I was pretty disappointed when I saw him at the begining of this year.
Brisbane gig at Family if anyone is intrested... has a great soundsystem, the space is great and I was genuinely excited to experience the performance.
It's perhaps a question of taste....Hawtin just didn't do it for me at all.
Regardless of the massive amount of elements that it appears he mixes together, it seemed that most of the time there was only the steady kick drum and around 2 or 3 layers of bleps, squelches and sweeps.
Sasha dj'd at the same venue in Nov04 performing a "live" set. And these pics do perhaps show the difference in the style between sasha/hawtin. Sasha's set was not dissimilar to a standard dj mix - one track to the next with a few fx builds. Pretty simple.
Having a glance at each's screens at some point during the night/s was only a small priority. Sasha's set in my opinion (however biased that may or may not be) was awesome. Good tunes, lots of stuff going on (I'm sure due to hard dedicated work by producers, rather than sasha) and kept my attention/me dancing for the marjority of the 3 hr set he played.
Perhaps a divide can be drawn between sasha/hawtin in terms of who dj's and who performs using live to it's utmost.
thoughts?

my thought is that you're confused. the hawtin .als you've seen in that pic has nothing to do with any performance he may have given, save that of 4 june 2004 in montreal. that was a Plastikman live PA, the first since 1995 and there hasn't been one since. when you saw him early this year it was his (granted, extended) dj set where ableton is primarily an efx unit. (that has changed slightly in recent months, but we're still talking about his material vs. him presenting other artists' material).
otherwise you're talking about taste differences, and you know what they say about that...

I saw Hawtin do a set a few years back in Melbourne .....
Unfortunately for him Voitek was performing also with a mental arsenal of hardware and blew everyones titts off.
He was way better than Hawtin Live if I may say so myself.
But hey what do I know.

But Sasha's not even DJing. I mean, beatmatching records is such a simple skill I taught my 71 year old mom to do it (admittedly she was 68 at the time). It took her less than three sessions with me to mix records well enough to play out. But this Sasha clown isn't even doing that!!! Sure, he kept you dancing, so could somebody's ipod. The issue isn't the merit of the music (that's the producer's credit as you admit yourself) but the the performance. and in Sasha's case, this fucking parasite isn't worthy to step on any stage without a gallows on it.
montrealbreaks wrote:EDIT:OK, admittedly that last bit was overstatement. I in no way actually think that he deserves the gallows (nor should operate one)
Honestly!!! I STILL haven't heard one of this dude's sets, I've only ever heard the name Sasha mentioned "around" for the last ten years or so - but this old dog's tired and lazy. I never had an opinion on him until I started reading this forum.
What's the point of this rant? I mean, SO WHAT if he plays "good tunes". If you're into trance, at least go see a trance performer who's actually performing, not being a human ipod. I don't know my head from my ass about trance, but I hear that both Infected Mushroom and DeepSky are killer shows.
As far as Hawtin goes, I don't really care about Techno, and even less for minimal techno. The sound either drives me batty or bores me. That said, I would be genuinely honoured to look over that man's shoulder for five minutes, and to thank him afterwards.
