Bitwig 1.0
Re: Bitwig 1.0
I'm just pissed hacks that don't care about squat got on the beta (no, I mean some serious trolls) and people that know a thing or two were passed up.
Sniff, sniff, I smell nepotism!

The hardest part for Bitwig will be getting new users as well as crossgrade users. The latter I can only see with a 30 free non-restricted trial and an extremely -earth shattering - crossgrade price.
Agreed. I am way to invested in time, money and workflow, to start over, unless "extremely earth shattering". I'd rather spend the time learning mandolin, 6 string banjo, or an e-drum kit.....

Seems like Bitwig is exactly competition for Live...CFM wrote:It's not really competition for Live (or any other DAW)as a matter of fact. A person who has invested time, effort and cash into any DAW is unlikely to jump ship too quickly.

of course it will depend on how solid and efficient it is in use, but I find the featureset appealing as a Live replacement. At least enough to demo it... whenever there is a demo out.
Re: Bitwig 1.0
By that logic, nothing is ever competition for anything else already established in some particular field of use. Someone bringing out a new DAW isn't really competition for any other existing DAW? Reeeeally? So when Studio One came out, it wasn't competition for any other DAW people had already been using for years, hmm? How about when Live came out?CFM wrote:It's not really competition for Live (or any other DAW)as a matter of fact.
The fact is, of course it's competition, the new product will always get new customers who would have paid for some other product instead. That's competition. Also, a lot of people do migrate from other products when something more suitable to them comes along. If it wasn't like this, it wouldn't pay off creating new competing products in the first place.
For example, I love using Live for certain things, but that's mostly because there's currently nothing else on the market that quite does that stuff in that manner I find so productive. If there's something that contains everything I need from Live, and also improves on many absolutely essential areas Ableton should have addressed years and years ago, of course I'm interested.
Being so closely related to Live, Bitwig can easily be seen as Live's main competitor in its particular segment.
Re: Bitwig 1.0
a competitor makes AL even better so it's great for us (even if u don't wanna changing) we've already got a secondary window (thx for Bitwig
) which makes the working with the arrangement view much-much better than before, so hail to Bitwig, it's a win-win situation for us: may the best DAW win
Re: Bitwig 1.0
I'm definitely interested in getting Bitwig Studio. It will have something that Live doesn't -- being able to see multiple tracks in the MIDI editor -- and that's a necessity for me when it comes to composing "note against note". I'm not hopeful that Ableton will ever implement this feature.

That said I don't think Ableton is going to feel any heat until like Bitwig 2.0. I don't think there will be too many early adopters until a few users go over and test the waters out. Once that is done those folks will often come back with more accurate assessments of what Bitwig can really do and areas it totally sucks at.
I'm guessing it will take 2.0 for Bitwig to make improvements in those sucky areas that we don't even know about yet.
But nonetheless this direct competition will be good for us users and probably even the Live program itself because Ableton will learn more about its own shortcomings than probably any other time in the past.
There has never been much direct competition with Live. Studio One and Reaper are both excellent DAWS in their own right but they are not Ableton. Logic and Cubase are very powerful full featured programs but not Ableton. FLStudio/Reason are somewhat Live centric but at the same time totally different programs. When you look at the Bitwig screenshots you definitely see Ableton Live.

I'm thinking the biggest thing in the beginning that will make or break Bitwig right now is the stability and CPU efficiency.
If Bitwig fails there, it is going to be an uphill battle for them. Bitwig definitely knows this hence the longest beta testing period I probably can remember.
If Bitwig does great here then it will be a fierce battle.
Price will be another factor but with this long beta testing, I doubt if Bitwig will be the cheapest program of the pack.
Re: Bitwig 1.0
Bitwig got about 688.000 Euro public funds from the city of Berlin ( http://www.digital-notes.de/info-zu-bitwig-studio/ ) and it has other investors too, I hope it won't be too expensive in the first round...especially if they want some money back

all jokes about it ever being released aside, if/when it is... if they can't zero in whatever new innovations they bring to the table efficiently only fools with too much money will mass migrate. early adopters can go for the real life beta test... and i get why Bitwig looks attractive, but a big hit in CPU efficiency will only beget more problems. even something like PDC being spot on doesn't matter if you can't run the plugins that feature addresses in the first place.
