Live isn't a "traditional" DAW.... nor do I personally want it to be...... I don't think they are in fact "competing" with the likes of Cubase and Logic..... more like offering a solid "alternative" approach to making music...?

I own all three (Logic, Cubase. Live), and really do use and apply Live differently from the other two....

The other apps handle video sync just fine (cos they are in part designed to match video to audio for post-production)... I presently use rewire to link Live into that workflow... so what is key here for me isn't to have Live handle video sync, but rather to insure that Live's rewire implementation is rock solid.... (!!!)

If you're getting serious about synching video for soundtracks, it might be time for you to add a "production DAW" type of app, and let Live continue to be what it is... a great tool for composing and live jamming/performance......

I hope they don't "consolidate" too much into what are really separate applied production concepts.....

That said, the Abletons have shown a real talent for rethinking the whole approach to things... so, maybe they'll come up with something that lets Live be a video sync controller too... the ultimate "all-in-one" audio/visual performance tool.....?

For now, I'm personally happy with where it's going... it's quite amazing really....... ;)

hey ...remember the name : "live" although it has gotten more daw funtcion it's still mainly a live program , not a filmscoring program.

for vj's i recommend "resolume 2" , we sinc it with ableton almost flawlessly., and work visually with a same kind of session view,

i recently came across this:-
http://jasondorie.com/midivid/docs/index.htm

so far its the only thing i've found that'll run behind live (when it's at, say 85-90% cpu) without affecting audio playback.
i'm still kind of fiddling with it, and its sort of basic but it can be sequenced from live and therefore sync perfectly. also, some of the video effects in it can be midi synced if you send midi clock on the same loopback/channel as the sequenceing.
not quite the same as built in video support though...

No movie support needed.

Use MIDI.

Movie support would be wasted as the interface isn't movie friendly, not like
other programs where you have a huge timeline.

Bloat. Crap. No need.

I ran a poll on this yesterday. It looks like a large majority of the users who responded were in agreement - don't wreck Live by adding on video.

so "still no movie support!" as a subject line is wrong. People don't want it.

if anything, people are saying - if you must add VJ support, do it as an optional extra purchase, because I don't want to buy it. But don't waste Ableton dev resources on it that could be working on new audio features/bug fixes.

I think this subject is dead.

next thing you'll be asking for is a score editor or 3d animation rendering ...

ooops! i meant this...

http://jasondorie.com/midivid/docs/index.html

its different to midivid, as far as i can tell it runs pretty much entirely on your videocard, hence the gpu bit of midividgpu.

I agree with AJ, ableton should never add video support. It would just make my CPU cry the big tears ;-)

I would personally love to just have a simple QT frame locked to Live with a SMPTE display. Live's elastic audio is perfect for video work, yet it doesn't support it. But hey, we have Rewire support - as usual, the Abes always provide a workaround.

Man ya kids don't read...
THE ORIGINAL POST was about having a video 'playback' window
in sync with Live so one could COMPOSE TO PICTURE for FILM & Video....
It was NOT about VJ capabilities at all... jeeezzz.
Absolutly no extra interface issues except a floating QuickTime movie...
Would be very useful.
Now we HAVE to use flakey ReWire and a whole other ap with Live
to compose to picture... major bummer.
(Though then I'd be asking for Meter & tempo mapping too... :D
