It was a good article, but just by reading it I felt like I was guilty of at least something in there and felt the urge to stop immediately and turn on Ableton, but I powered through. It was good.

I kind of agree, I don't get all the +1s it gets.

All of these points, might be something that the writer discovered to work for himself to be important, but there is nothing in there that should be generalized.

For example: I don't agree at all with "make that track even if you yourself realize it's crap"
If you just think it's crap, because you depend too much on the judgement of your pears ( ), sure you need to overcome this insequrity. But if your own estetics tell you something is wrong: Do something about that!!! What good is a crap track gonna do your self confidence anyways, especialy if you keep piling them up, because you keep telling yourself that it's more important to finish tracks, than to teach yourself how to make good tracks.

Also the whole: Everyone can be an artist and you just need to practise more is BS. Many people nowadays (or maybe it has always been this way) start making music for totally the wrong reasons. Not because of a drive to make music, but out of a (usually) misplaced desire for recognition by their pears (sorry, I had too ), or hopes of fame and fortune. These people very rarely just need to discover their talent, and the sooner they give up the better for them and us

Which is not to say, that to be an artist, you don't need to practise a lot. You do, but trying to force something into existence by pure effort rarely works.

And I would say all the points in the article are limited in a similar way. It's a fluff piece, that is trying to hit some emotional points to let people make excuses for themselves and their own failures.

It would be pretty useless if a very successful musician had written it (because these things can not be generalized as I already said), but it would at least give some insight into the guys mind.
But written by some blogger on the web?! Well...

I dunno, there was one loophole (which I can't remember) and other than that it was straight forward. The fact that we are discussing it means we fail miserably

I do this for fun. 10 years ago when I wasn't an old man, I had delusions that maybe I could do something. Fast forward and I'm just not good enough. Doesn't mean I don't like doing it.

Nobody is attached to your productions as much as you are.

If somebody critiques your tracks and gives you advice on changing or improving the track don’t slam them with constant slight revision “How about now, bro?” mixes. It will get on people’s nerves and odds are they aren’t paying that much attention to really know the difference anyway. Fact.

Not sure about that, but I might be misunderstanding. People like critiquing, so posting examples in a thread that is about YOUR song for example......is pretty appropriate. Maybe you are saying if they go back and 10 minutes later just to appease someone?

I took these somebodies to be real life people, not other forum nerds like us.

I’m basically saying don’t abuse people’s helpfulness and posting on a forum is one thing but contacting somebody directly frequently with “how about now?” can get old, especially if the changes are subtle.

I think it’s a noob thing coupled with easy access to people through the internet. Personally I find production tweaking through online correspondence cumbersome, but that’s where we’re at. If you and the other person were sitting in the same room you could tweak away on the fly in real time and hear how each adjustment affects everything else instead of sending a file and getting “the kick is cutting through now but now the bassline lost clarity” and back and forth it goes.

Thank you for a very nice read. I am guilty of almost all of them. I pledge to finish something this weekend. I have been working on the same "song" for a month. During that time, it has morphed into four distinctly different tunes. If I don't force myself to finish, I'll still be working on it next year.
